problem #2

Sonata Limited 2.4L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 145,000 miles

The problems I had with this vehicle include: wheels, tires, brakes, brake pads, ball bearings, and engine belt noise.

The wheel base started to corrode and rot after a while, making the tires deflate over time and have low tire pressure almost constantly. The tires also were worn significantly with normal city driving. Had all four wheels and tires replaced, aligned, and rotated.

The brakes were probably the most prevalent issue with this car. at first it was only squeaks. Then over time it became like a crunching sound. It got so bad I could hear this crunching sound coming from the bearings with my windows closed and my stereo turned up. Turns out I needed the brakes cleaned, then the pads and bearing replaced which cost a lot of money ($600+). The problem was only fixed after going to the mechanic over 3 times for the same issue. Even after I got the brakes fixed, they still made an awful squeaking noise whenever I put the car in reverse.

The steering wheel also started to hang in one spot and not return to center so I had to get that re-aligned.

One major recall these cars has was a mechanism that is used to control the power steering ceases to work in this model. This problem became a huge safety concern as I had it happen multiple times on busy roads where my power steering would freeze up and I could barely turn my steering wheel at all. Unfortunately the recall was for the 2011 models and up only even though the 2010 models had this problem as well, meaning that you were stuck with the problem.

The engine belts also started to make this horrible rattling sound every time I ignited the car after about 120k miles.

The last problem I can think of was I had a backfire happen randomly when I was stopped at an intersection one day. It sounded like someone shot a shotgun and a bullet hit my van. I looked around the car and no impact was made. It wasn't an animal rushing into my car either. Idk why it happened but it did and I thought my car was gonna blow up - I was so shocked by the pop.
