This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Hyundai dealer.
Like many Hyundais and Kias, my 2011 Sonata's steering began making noises at around 60k miles. When the problem first began, it was nothing more than a slight noise. However, as time went on, the noise got louder and louder. At this point, it was nothing more than a noise, so I was not concerned. However, my steering wheel began shaking violently beginning at 67 mph. When the shaking began, I was at approximately 100k miles and therefore out of warranty.
The dealership says it's a common problem and the repair costs $530. So I called Hyundai customer service. The case manager told me he would contact the dealership and give me a call back within 3-5 days. A week goes by and I still have not received a call. I call Hyundai customer service again. A different case manager simply tells me that I have to take my car to the dealership and fix it at my expense. I ask why there is no "campaign" for this common problem. She tells me that this is NOT a common problem. This LIE annoys me. So I hung up and here I am on the internet trying to find some more information. Just as I expected, there are a lot of other Hyundai and Kia owners with the same steering wheel problem complaining about the same issue. This is definitely the last time I ever buy a Hyundai. I definitely regret buying this car.

My 2011 Sonata was recalled and repaired on October 2010. The recall 097 is due to steering problems that could cause a loss of control with potential for property damage, injury or death. Today, October 6, 2015 I brought my Sonata to dealership for steering problems. The dealership said I need a new steering column, and since my warranty was expired 5 months earlier, I will need to pay $1220. I only have 55,000 miles on the car. So many others, as I'm reading complaints, have this same problem. I can not and should not have to pay this amount.

For months now my 2011 Sonata Limited has been making a grinding noise when the steering wheel is turned in either direction at any speed including zero mph. Also, you can feel whatever is rubbing/grinding when holding the steering wheel. I had the car looked at by a Hyundai dealer and they witnessed the complaint I have but after keeping the car for three days could not find a fix. The dealer simply told me that every thing checked out OK and was at the standards set by Hyundai..... and that my car just makes this noise...Really??? Pretty sure if this noise was normal, then all Sonatas would make it. I'll add, when they kept my Sonata for three days I used a rental Sonata that didn't have this problem.
If anyone has experienced this and was able to get it fixed, please share any info you have.

They fixed the problem, there was a rattling in the steering column. They had to replace a piece. I can't remember the name of the piece but looking at recalls in the past this May have been it. Since then the dealer had several people come in with the problem, they claimed never heard of prior. Took them a while to figure out.

THE STEERING STARTED TO LOOSEN GRADUALLY BUT WHEN I HAD IT CHECKED ,FIRST BY MY PRIVATE MECHANIC IT COST ME $278 BUT THAT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. HE THEN SENT ME TO HYUNDAI WHICH REPLACED THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN FOR $500. I then began looking up the problems with the 2011 Sonota (which I bought from a relative used) and saw what a mess of problems it has. I wonder if there will be a future recall so I can recoup my money.
