Sonata

My car started making a loud ticking noise in the engine, I took it in and they told me it's normal but when I bought the car it was not making that noise at all. It no longer fills to 410 miles when I put gas and the gas does not last as long as it used to. When parked and the car is on it will start shaking

Sonata

  • 120,000 miles
Sonata had a noticeable decline in acceleration minutes before the engine had a small fire. The car was chugging slightly when stopped at a red light and after completing the turn, all of the dash lights illuminated and I quickly pulled over. After shutting the car off and trying to restart it, the engine began smoking. During this drive on local streets, I never went above 45 mph and wasn't driving the car hard.

While I was driving on the freeway last night my car stalled. There was no warning lights, sounds or smells coming from the car. As my car began to slow down I was able to maneuver myself to the shoulder avoiding an accident. I put the car in park and turned the car off and attempted to restart with no success. I had the car towed to my home and tried starting it this morning, nothing. It would click, the dash lights would come on but still will not start. I contacted blue link and they told me all system we're green on their end and could not see anything wrong with my car and could not do an on demand diagnostic for my car, I would have to get it to a dealership for them to perform the diagnostic tests. I had no problems with my car, I activated the blue link product 2 days ago and now this happens. I see there has been 8 recalls on this vehicle by visiting this website. I've had this car a little over a month. How can I find out if any of the recalls have been repaired and if any of the remaining recalls could stall the engine. I was told about 2 recalls: #174 airbag control unit and #953 software update to engine control module.

problem #238

Jan 112019

Sonata

  • 124,000 miles
While driving in traffic car began to jerk and lose speed though the engine was running. The car stopped in the middle of moving traffic. Transmission fluid spilled out profusely. Transmission was replaced but started to slip again the same day I picked it up after new (remanufactured) transmission was installed by the Hyundai dealer. Prior to this transmission issue, the alternator in my car failed while driving in the middle of moving traffic. This complete transmission failure occurred shortly after a new engine was installed because the original engine seized and failed prior. Alternator was replaced. The newly installed alternator failed again. A new alternator was once again installed. I am now having similar electrical problems yet again and there is a current concern that the vehicle may possibly stop suddenly and hazardously again while in motion.

Sonata

  • 150,000 miles
I pulled into a parking spot and noticed nothing out of the ordinary with my vehicle. When I was stepping away from my car and pushed the lock button there was no clicking sound. I continued into the building and returned to my car a few minutes later and it would not start. All of the lights would come on, but the brake locked up and the car would not start. I attempted to charge the battery which did not work. I unhooked the battery cables for a period of time to reset the lock system and possibly unlock the starting system, which did not work either. It has only been two weeks since I took this vehicle into the dealership to have the computer system updated due to engine failure issues in other vehicles. I purchased this vehicle less than a year ago and it does not show from what I can tell a recall. However I was instructed by the dealership to have the car towed into them so they can check to see if it is engine failure or a number of recall issues that I have not been aware of.

Dec 012018

Sonata

  • 89,900 miles
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that there was engine debris that had not been removed from the crankshaft during vehicle production. The failure increased the risk of the vehicle stalling. The contact called NHTSA and was referred to the federal trade commission to report that he was sold a vehicle in October of 2018 that was faulty and included in NHTSA campaign number: 18V137000 (seat belts, air bags). The contact took the vehicle to john amato Hyundai (8301 N 76th St, milwaukee, wi 53223, (414) 616-3220), but the engine was not inspected. The manufacturer was contacted and could not duplicate the failure. A case manager advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer. The contact was waiting to hear back from the manufacturer on how the vehicle would be diagnosed by the dealer. The contact stated that he had an extended warranty for the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 89,900.

While driving to mobile Alabama after our vehicle was inspected and were told that our vehicle was fine, the engine suddenly stopped running in the middle of traffic. We were lucky not to get hit by semi trucks at the time. At the time of this incident we were headed South bound on I-55 at 70 mph. In the right lane with heavy truck traffic, thankfully I was able to get off the road without incident.

2012 2.0T limited with 95K. 12-18-18, while driving from austin to houston tx vehicle loses acceleration on the highway. Check engine light comes on, along with the emergency parking brake light (which comes on intermittently and dealership yet to define problem), and abruptly goes from 75 to 0 mph. Vehicle will not respond to any acceleration and I have to find a way from the freeway to feeder without power. Inoperable. Limped three miles with police escort. Car towed. Dealership cannot duplicate issue. I make them keep vehicle to investigate. They get a code error and change out the ECM for a mere $1400. Meanwhile, I must find transportation in a city I do not live and rent a car for a week. Retrieved vehicle. 2 weeks later, traveling to houston on 12-26, check engine light comes on, car will not accelerate; spitting, feels like no gas getting to engine, heavy smoke from tailpipe. Christmas eve, no place to stop. Barely make it to houston. Inoperable. Car goes to another dealership in houston. Again, without transportation in a city I do not live in. Faulty high pressure fuel pump. Carbon buildup. Another $1100. Prior to that, March 2017, engine failure travelling to houston. Knocking noise. Wont go. Inoperable (luckily, this one I made it to a full stop). Car towed. Waited three months for a new engine (not in my hometown). Had to travel to pick up vehicle. (car had been inspected by hometown dealership specifically for metal debris and it did not get flagged for replacement). Directly after that, while driving in austin. Vehicle stops in major intersection. Inoperable. Towed. Degraded battery cable because the vehicle sat for three months while waiting for an engine. The only warranty was the engine. Can you say lemon? the only saving grace is that myself and my family were not seriously injured when our vehicle became inoperable while driving on a highway.
