problem #221

Jan 012019

Sonata

  • 167,000 miles
The car has randomly stalled three times, two of which occurred when entering traffic (right-turn major intersection and entering highway). All lights on dash appear without warning and the car wont accelerate, brake optimally, or steer (like in the last instance). Car won't start back up at all now, won;T even try to turn over. All instances occurred randomly while in motion. The first two times it happened the car started up with a sputtering hesitation, now I am pretty sure the engine seized on the last occurrence.

Sonata

Arriving at busy intersect when accelerators and brakes ceased to work all dash lights began flashing and I was fortunate enough for light to be green and was able to coast to a stop at shoulder through intersection w flashers and horn blowing ! I restarted car and pulled into a local business w a clunking noise!! was told by my mechanic who has regularly serviced this vehicle that it was the engine ! why brake/acceleration not working ?? I was told he's had 3 other Sonatas in this month that 'just burned up all the oil ' without a light on or anything. I could have been on S busy highway and killed in addition to risk to others.

Sonata

  • 130,000 miles
While driving on two lane highway vehicle shut down without warning. The car smelled of burning plastic and smoke was coming from passenger side under hood. Car was towed to dealer and motor was replaced thru recall. On 8/20 I was scheduled to pick up and was notified that the main wiring harness had melted badly and that it would not be covered. I filed case #11538113 with Hyundai corporate on 8/20, citing that it appeared to be related to the motor seizing, and/or a safety defect. I was denied assistance on 9/20 and contacted the dealership to begin work at my costs. The car is still at the dealership as they are stating Hyundai cannot release the wiring harness. Research on why brought me to similar compaints the appear to warrant a recall.

Had motor replaced from a previous recall, 4days after this fix I noticed a rough idle. Went to numerous shops incld dealership was told by dealership that recall was done and any other repairs would be out of pocket. Problem has progressed from rough idle and engine noise to poor acceleration and mistimed boosts. As in when entering highway car doesnt accelerate very fast very long delay before boost intiates. Once at desired speed when slowing down car boosts without pressure to accelertator!!! now that winter has arrived, sporadically on cold start car idles even rougher and sounds as if it with shut off. When driving in traffic car idles rough then shuts off!! no power steering! no lights ! no power! this happened whilst car is in drive and in motion! I try to avoid hwys and night time driving when I can as im scared to death of this car. I purchased it used in dec2017 11 days later intial issues began with car loosing power. Now after issue was "fixed" by replacement motor same intermediate lost of power issues again but with the added boosting issue as well now.

"fire hazard" received an engine replacement under Hyundai engine recall, I picked-up the car on 09-13-18. I've had several problems occur in the last few months. One of the main issues is a fuel/gasoline smell inside the cabin and around the engine compartment. Now there is extremely strong smell of gasoline whenever I just turn on the ignition without starting the car. I also notice that there was a puddle of gasoline on the ground under the engine area. I read that some cars are catching on fire after Hyundai replaced the engines under the engine recall. My concern is for safety of my family. There is potential that my car may/will catch on fire. The car has not been driven in over three weeks. I've filed a complaint on 12-03-2018 with Hyundai motors(case # 13222827) but have not received any updates as of yet.

Sonata

  • 91,000 miles
Car seized at high speeds, brakes locked and eventually was able to get car to stop on side of the road. Noticed burning under hood around engine and starter. When taken to dealership, was told that the issue was due to engine recall. Called in and expressed concern with Hyundai that car caught fire. I am now seeing that Hyundai is being under federal investigation over the fires. I notified the company back in June of 2018 about this issue, and was told it was just the engine recall. Now that the company is under federal investigation, I feel the company lied to me earlier during my issue.

I currently own a 2012 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 in which I purchased from a dealer and the car is currently using oil. Under further investigation I have read up on the recall for the engines and see that many were replaced under a "recall" I contacted Hyundai recall support and they told me to take it to a local dealer in which I did. My car had the airbag recall performed and I asked about the engine recall in in turn the service manager told me that the engine had been "checked" by previous dealer but not replaced under the recall. The car has all the symptoms of the recall needing to be performed on the engine assembly but they refuse to help me because the dealer states its outside of the recall milage slot. I feel as if there is a recall on the engine as a safety recall that the engine should have been replaced by the previous dealer before it was sold from them. Instead I purchase the vehicle and unknowingly have a potential safety hazard for me and my family. I believe a safety recall is a safety recall. Shouldn't matter the milage. It's almost as if Hyundai is saying "well if it's made it this far then screw it" the vehicle is using oil and has metal shavings in oil
