Had oil changed 2 weeks before departing on a 1600 mile round trip and checked it just prior to departing. On the return trip at approximately the 1200 mile mark, checked the oil and found it to be 2 quarts low and black in appearance. At completion of the 1600 miles found it to be about 1/2 quart low. So it appears to have used 2 1/2 quarts in 1600 miles of highway driving at 70 MPH. Car is used mostly by the wife for commuting to and from work, (10 miles total) Mon.- Fri., grocery shopping and errands, etc.
Her place of business was shutdown due to Covid-19 in mid Mar. so it hasn't been driven more that about 500 miles since we have been sheltering in place. Dip stick shows down a another quart. Spoke with local Hyundai dealer and was told they would have to do a complete diagnostics to determine the problem and I would have to pay for the diagnostic tests. Have searched the net and found that the excessive oil burning is most likely due to the design of the engine and appears to be a precursor to the siege of the engine with possible fire.
Prior to going on our 1600 mile trip, oil was always clear when checked and never had to add oil between changes. All recall notices from Hyundai have been answered in a timely manner. Hyundai informed me that the warranty had been extended to 120,000 miles after one of the recall notices had been fulfilled. Since the 10 years have not expired nor the mileage exceeded, should I just drive it until it dies and then tow it to Hyundai for repair rather than pay for a bunch of worthless diagnostics to be done at my expense?
