problem #315

Nov 212018

Sonata

  • 40,000 miles
Vehicle was driving perfectly fine, no noises, driving down the interstate with my daughter in the car, the motor locked up and caught on fire. The car turned off on its own and I was able to coast to the side of the road and put out the fire. I contacted numerous dealerships, Hyundai and tried to have the motor replaced due to seeing this recall and was denied saying my VIN did not fall under that recall. So I had to purchase a new motor and pay for installation on my own.

Stopped at a tool booth on a 2 lane highway. When the bar raised to let me through, I accelerated and the car completely died without warning. Fortunately, was able to get to shoulder and call for roadside assistance. Garage car was towed to tried to crank it and got smoke under the hood. Eventually determined that the engine was locked up and needs to be replaced. Engine has just over 90K miles and has had regular oil changes.

Sonata

  • 100,000 miles
I purchased a 2013 Hyundai Sonata and once it hit a little over 100K miles it started using more and more oil. I'm currently using 1-1.5 quarts every 1000 miles or so. I religiously change the oil but it's either way too low by that time or is almost black. I check my oil every week since I'm a one income household and I take my kids to and from school in it. I maintain it very well and make sure it has the proper oil and other fluids. It's a constant hassle trying to keep it from going low and blowing the motor up. I hope this problem is resolved soon.

While driving out of town 2 hours away from home on major highway car suddenly stopped. Had my 3 children in the back and had to get in the middle lane and turn my hazards on and call a town truck. I had to pay 300 dollars to get the car towed home. While searching online I saw a engine recall and several other recalls for the 2013 Hyundai Sonata. I called the Hyundai recall line and they set up an appointment to have the car checked out. I called Hyundai and asked if they had any tow services that they provided, they stated that I would have to pay for tow services so I then payed 60 dollars to have the car towed to Hyundai by aaa which Hyundai advices. Hyundai called and informed me the next day that they put it on the machine and that it was the engine that failed and they would have to order an engine from Hyundai they also informed me that I would be charged 150 dollars for them to get the key fob to work to the car. After Hyundai received the new engine they called and informed me that they are unable to pull the engine in and out of the car due to from end damage which included the radiator, motor blower, and head gasket and that I would have to agree to pay 2895 dollars for them to even put the engine in the car. He asked me if the dealership I bought the car from had reported any wrecks where the front end could be damaged. I then explained to the manager of Hyundai mechanics that I have a clear blue title and in order for there to be a wreck that caused front end damage I would by law have to have a savage title.I was sold the car as is from car lot but was informed there were no accident and had been certified tested. Looking online and speaking with another mechanic I was informed that radiator motor blower and head gasket are are causes due to an car running hot from engine failure.speaking with corporate they made false promises and then declined.

There has been a engine knocking sound slowly building up and my oil was still 2K miles good. After work Saturday evening as I was driving home it was knocking hard then the engine light started flashing. I got code checked and the code was ' P1326' I need up changing my oil to see it anything would help and it did not. My car won't go past 2K rpms due to 'limp mode' asked my mechanic friend about help and he came over and looked at it. Told me he's had customers with same problems and there is a campaign recall 953 per tsb 18-01- 027 and they got it fixed.

In addition, the check engine indicator illuminated and a loud knocking noise came from the engine. The contact pulled the vehicle over to a mall parking lot and later managed to drive to an independent mechanic. The contact called the manufacturer and they provided a case number. The contact was informed to bring the vehicle to key Hyundai of milford (566 bridgeport ave, milford, ct 06460, (203) 877-6820). The vehicle was taken to the same dealer on August 8, 2018 to be repaired per an unknown recall. Was driving down the road at regular speed 55mph when the car quit with out any lights coming on or any weird noise after we got off the road we tried starting it again but nothing happened so we had it towed to the nearest garage where we was told the motor was locked up. It has around 124,000.seems to me that this is a occurring problem with this motor and do not understand how they pick and choose which ones are recalled. So what's a person supposed to do when it's your only transportation and your on a fixed income.

Sonata

  • 46,328 miles
The recall for Hyundai, campaign953 was to install engine software update for all Sonata vehicles from 2011-2018 with a 2.4L gdi. I had the engine recall software update done on 3/26/19. This was intended as a warning system in the event of engine failure. On 4/15/19, while driving on the freeway in los angeles, my engine seized up, and put my life at risk. The software update did not work, and there was no warning at all. If I had not been in the right lane, and able to steer over into a very narrow shoulder of the freeway, I could have been seriously injured or worse. The car was towed to my mechanic's lot near me, since it was a Sunday evening, and Hyundai was not open. The next day, my mechanic did start the car, and said it should be fine to drive it the short distance to the Hyundai dealer, less than 2 miles away, since it was a warranty situation. I got one block, and the engine seized up again. I had it towed the 2 miles to the dealer. They discovered the engine had to be replaced, which took almost 4 weeks. No explanation of the software update failure. Since getting the car back on May 7,2019- I have had total anxiety, and fear the same issue could happen. I had a severe panic attack on the freeway on May 10, that was terrifying, and a friend had to stay on the phone with me until I got to work. I have contacted the Hyundai Corp. Legal dept. Through an attorney, and there has been no satisfaction in compensation or consideration for the fact that due to their faulty engine, and recall software failure, they put my life at risk! the customer care dept. Is the worst I have ever experienced with any company, and I am now at extreme financial loss. The re-sale value has plummeted, and I now have financial stress being forced to get another car I feel safe in. I have lost total confidence in Hyundai. This was a terrible nightmare that is not being resolved! help!

I was driving at about 30 mph, I came to a turn and when I slowed down I lost power from the engine. The radio and headlights still functioned for a while after but eventually went out. Engine burns oil faster than any other car I have owned, also since I have been driving this car oil is usually always burnt or black from previous oil change.
