Sonata

  • 234,500 miles
About 3 weeks ago around 6am I was driving to work while on the highway when suddenly the check engine light pop up and the throttle pedal went down and it won't pedal or move no more. Didn't know what was going on until my car was towed the dealership place where I was told is a recall. Two weeks after I was called that my car is ready and good to go but unfortunately before the car got to my place the check engine light is back on and the accelerator pedal don't move normally again, when you are on motion and you try to change lane or overtaking the pedal won't move until you force it with pressure and if you happen to be at traffic lights the same thing will happen, the car don't move normal again. I took it back to the dealership and explain what happened to them again and they took the check engine light off that it should be fine after but alas the problem is worsening day in day out and my safety is on the line now. Initially I was told they are going to replace the engine but I realized they didn't replace the engine instead some parts were replaced and that makes it worse than before. Driving the car now is at the high risk for me or other road users because I don't know what could happen next. The check engine light is still on and the pedal still not moving well and especially when you are moving uphill. Please I will like this to be investigated because I don't if other people have experience similar problem.

Sonata

I was driving down a city street when all of a sudden my 2013 Hyundai Sonata stopped on me. It was like the engine cut off, all the car lights came on--the check engine light, eps light, etc. All the lights came on at once and the driving wheel locked on me, it was extremely hard for me to turn the wheel at all. I was pressing on the acceleration pedal because the car was stopping in the middle of a city street where other cars were passing by me. However, I was unable to accelerate or press on the brakes on the car, I was able to coast the car to the side of the road. Once the car was on the side of the road, I tried to crank the car back up with no luck. I was able to get the car "on"--as in being able to listen to the radio but the car would never fully turn over. When trying to get the car to crank up I began to notice smoke coming from engine and a spark coming from the engine would light up a little every time I tried to get the car to turn over. I also noticed that the hood of the car also smelled like burnt metal when I was able to get the car on the side of the road even before I tried to restart my car after it cut off on me. The engine completely stopped on me in the middle of the road. All my maintenance and services with my 2013 Hyundai Sonata were up to date. I had got my car serviced less than a month ago before this happened to me, the engine seized. After repeatedly trying to start the car with no luck. I had to call aaa to come and tow my car.

Sonata

  • 176,000 miles
While driving along a major roadway at 60 mph, the vehicle simply shut off and much of the lights such as check engine, etc lit up. I lost all power and brakes and coasted to a side street. The car would not start again and began heavy smoking. I had it towed to my mechanic who stated the engine had locked up. There were no warning signs, check engine light, or any other indication there was a problem.

Purchased used 2013 Hyundai Sonata hybrid on 1/18/2019. On 5/22/19 had oil changed & requested diagnostic due to accelerator issues and hitting high speed bump. Same issue occurred along with car not starting on 5/28 and brought car to dealer on 5/29/19. Dealer could not repeat issue but replaced batteries in both key fobs. Drove car to ct (from nc) on 7/12/19. Car was fine except the A/C was not cooling well. Turned car off & let sit for 10 mins. It was better. On 7/18/19 my 17 yo was in motion on busy interstate 91 South in ct. Car decelerated & alarms rang out. A warning advised "hybrid battery failure" & "safely pull over". she was able to drive to the side. Highway safety patrol came & advised her to start car again. Lights came on but engine would not. Had car towed to lia Hyundai in enfield, ct. Called 7/19, left message rtc. I asked for manager who advised the same & said he would have to run a diagnostic to see what was wrong. I called Hyundai motor America & got a ticket number. Was told that if it was the battery they "may be willing to pay and may be willing to tow car back to nc once completed" again if approved. Need tech to submit a work order req and special tow request if prior authorization was approved. On 7/22 a diagnostic was ran & sent to hma showing hybrid battery needs to be replaced. I called hma & was given a national team ticket. Service manager rich called on 7/29 advising Hyundai is requiring more tests & wants pictures. He called back to advise that Hyundai is now telling him to just replace the safety plug & relay switch. Advised Hyundai would pay 60% and we would need to pay 40%. cost was $1000 but part needed to be ordered. Can't guarantee that it will work. I spoke to nicolette on 7/29. Was told they would only pay the 60% as a good will gesture. Car purchased in January 2019 at 96610 miles & only drove till 104513.

Since buying this car as 2nd owner I have replaced the rear brake bulb 5 times in 1 yr. The wiring seems to be the issue. Last week car literally doesn't start when trying to it sputters and then I have to cut it off to go finally get it to start. Today it turned over but sputtering continues 2 more times when try to to start, then 3rd time it cranks.

While driving down the highway today, my engine died. I was able to coast off the highway and onto a frontage road. I tried to restart my vehicle without success. I opened the hood to let other drivers know I was stranded. Within a couple of minutes I noticed a burning smell then flames coming from my engine. I closed the hood hoping it would put out the fire. Unfortunately it did not. I have photos and videos of the smoke, then fire and eventually the fire department putting out the fire. I performed a google search and found an April 2019 car and driver article stating the NHTSA is investigating the exact same thing. Feel free to contact me for further details.

Hyundai has created a lot of problems since buying this car in my life. I have had 3 recalls corrected and recently got a moto replacement after almost killing myself driving down the high way and my car shutting off on me. Also, you can drive from my job and house and find 3-4 Sonata's who have brake lights out. This is ridiculous. Please do something about this!!!!

In the evening of 07/11/2019 I was driving my 2013 Hyundai santa on the bishop Ford expressway, when smoke began to come out of the hood. I pulled over to the shoulder, and at that time, my car was completely filled with black smoke, and the brakes completely failed, foot went right to the floor. The car coasted until it finally stopped. By this time, the car was in fire. I was able to exit before it completely engulfed in flames. There was no warning to me that this car was going to start on fire. I had the engine replaced 2 years ago because of engine failure. Two engines in 6 years is definitely not normal. I could have been killed in that car.. Hyundai needs to take responsibility.

2013 Hyundai just died while driving down a major road on my way home from work had to be towed home at 11:30 pm on Thursday June 13th. Them on Saturday had to have it towed from our house to Hyundai of rockwall. Where I called them on Monday the 17th of June and they stated to me the motor has seized and they would have to analyze the engine and take pictures and get approve to fix or replace the engine. I have researched and researched I can't believe so many people have and had the same problem with their engine, how can this be unless something is dead wrong with the engines in not only our car but thousands if not millions. Not sure about everyone else but we need our car for work. And having to pay people to take use to and from work is not fun to us at all.we live in royse city Texas and my car stopped in the middle of the road on me tried to start it up and smoke coming from under the hood and smelled like wires was burning and I got out of the car quickly afraid of it catching on fire. In greenville Texas watch is 21 miles from home no fun out at night alone until the tow truck arrived.

Vehicle is intermittantly cutting out while driving or at a stop. 88K miles multiple events within days now. ESC comes on and won't turn off since warm weather arriving. Normal dry running conditions. Loss of power to drivetrain. Accelerator depressed causes loud abnormal tin ringing sound from engine compartment. Have to pull the car over to shut off and restart. Condition occurs whether ESC switch is on or off. Manual shifting is disabled. Transmission feels jerky just before. ESC event seems to occur mostly when accelerator is released up to a stop or cruising. Release of accelerator, trans jerks, ESC engages but won't release till car is reset. Vehicle underwent a recall campaign for a bad transmission temp sensor cable recently. Dealer says no code, no fix possibility. Car occasionally smells like burning rubber.
