I've owned 4 door sedans with 2.0 or 2.2 engines for many years now and although I know that every car is different, I didn't expect that this car would be that different as far as fuel consumption. Since I bought it, this car has gotten steadily worse with its use of fuel and have recently noticed that it's leaving a dark smudge by the exhaust pipe, as if it's been smoking.
Judging by the mileage indicator, the car seems to only be getting about 17-20 mpg on the highway and even less than that in the city. This, to me, is unacceptable for such a small engine. I don't drive like a maniac and tend to stay under 80 mph on the freeway. I never gun the engine or do anything to indicate that I may be the problem as far as my driving is concerned. I
'm reluctant to take it in to the dealership where I bought it for fear of getting bamboozled. I know a little bit about cars, but not enough to diagnose bigger issues. If anyone has any advice or suggestions I would appreciate it very much!
