My Hyundai Sonata 2013 steering column makes a clunk and knocking sound when turning the steering wheel. And recently it is getting worse especially when going over bumps and raises a cause of awareness as it is a manufacturing defect. I took it to the dealership, with an inspection and was told steering coupler needs replacement. At at 130, 000 miles I am out of warranty.

Nothing has happened so far but it has a really bad steering problems. It seems so sensitive but I read on edmunds that a lot of people are have similar problems with this year make model and year also. It goes to the right and left a lot and won't stay straight. That is unsafe. Please have Hyundai look into this.

Sonata

  • 51,000 miles
Steering clunk when stopped testing side to side movement. Loud, in cab. Possible steering coupler failure. Unknown without disassembly. Potential for steering failure, causing accident. May be cause for off track steering issue while traveling on the highway. A previous complaint was made to local dealership that the vehicle does not hold course (steering line), forcing constant corrections with steering wheel to drive straight (or in desired direction of travel). Gives a feeling that tires are "tracking in a grooved highway" when you are on a smooth roadway at highway speeds 65mph.

This has been an issue from day one since I purchased the car used in January 2018. First drive to work. The problem is that the steering sticks at highway speeds 50-75 mph. As one drives down the road, you are always making little adjustments to keep the car going straight or while in a long sweeping bend or turn. My car will catch or stick in the straight up steering position or when making long sweeping turns. Instead of the steering wheel moving smoothly while make these adjustments, the steering will stick and cause you to over steer. Makes you have to use force to get the wheel to move out of its stuck position. It tends to wear you out because you're constantly fighting with the steering. I deal with this daily as my commute is 90 miles a day to work on the highway. I have read numerous complaints on other sites as well. I have taken it to the dealer, and they have adjusted the steering mode. The car works fine at city speeds(0-50mph) but tends to really stiffin and gets "sticky" at highway speeds. I feel this is really going to cause accidents. Being the car jerks to the side when adjusting. This really needs to be addressed, as it is a safety concern for myself and others.

The steering in this car is faulty and it's becoming dangerous. I don't have the issue every time I drive it, but it's happening more often as of late. When making a right or left turn the car will over turn (quickly jerk) towards the curve or towards oncoming traffic even when switching lanes on the highway it does this at times. I'll have to regain control in order to not hit the car next to me. This has been going on since I brought the car which was two summers ago. I will put the day it happened last below.

My Hyundai Sonata 2013 steering column has always made a clunk sound when turning the steering wheel, recently it is getting worse and raises a cause of awareness as it is a manufacturing defect that apparently keeps being reported on this vehicle. Two personal mechanics and autonation have ad said it is the most common problem with my type of vehicle. I am afraid it will lock on me while driving causing an accident of any kind due to negligence of the governed standards required by law to protect consumers vehicle purchases. I deeply request and highly insist the government investigate the apparently most common problem of this vehicle before it becomes something to haunt the company in regret.

Severe clunk from steering column. When the wheel is initially turns, there is a short amount of "play" before a loud clunk can be heard. This is also heard going over bumps. I feel this may be something coming loose and can lead to problems with steering.

I was not able to regain control before I wrecked. When the officer arrived on seen he could not move the car because the steering wheel was still locked. So he had to use his car to push my car out of traffics way. The amount of damaged done they want to total the car....updated 10/17/17 updated 7/27/18

Car shakes a little bit at highway speeds. The problem is a loud popping noise when turning. Typically in parking lots at slower speeds. Do not hear the popping when driving ever. You can also sit in the car with the car running, turn the wheel either direction and when you turn the wheel back you can feel and hear the popping in the steering wheel and continue going back and forth producing the popping noise and vibration with every turn of the wheel. Had everything checked at private mechanic and the inner tie rods were replaced. Did not resolve the issue. The car had the engine replaced at 90000 miles related to another recall. Charged me 400 dollars for a new starter at that time when nothing was wrong with the starter prior to the engine seizing. The car now has 99900 miles on it, but the popping noise has been present since 94000 miles. One mechanic says it is rack and pinion another is saying eps needs replaced. I am calling the dealership tomorrow but both are costly repairs and a safety issue. Now the traction control light is on.

Was at a repair shop last week and was told I needed to look into a recall for my steering wheel. It makes a loud noise when adjusted or when wheel turned like a clunk noise. When I checked my VIN # it showed no recall. So now I' am a bit concerned that maybe my VIN, make and model didn't show affected by this recall but is affected. Thank you

The Hyundai Sonata 2.0T limited 2013 sedan has a lose stirring wheel - which causes wandering from left to right and vice versa at low and high speeds - the driver has to constantly keep adjusting the car which is not only dangerous but also causes fatigue especially on long routes. Many have complained online about this issue but Hyundai is dodging the issue by saying its as per specs or you aren't used to power/electronic stirring. [the car will not maintain a straight line you can be holding the wheel with all might or let go and see it wander to one side even without needing wheel alignment] the shocks are also too hard on the car resulting in a rough/bumpy ride
