I'm the original owner of a 2014 Hyundai Sonata GLS. This car has been nothing but a headache for me. Problems started to occur around 40,000 miles with the check engine light coming on. I took the car to the dealership 3 times to have the issue resolved. The dealer was unable to find any trouble and continued to reset the check engine light. I did my own personal investigation and found out it was a bad EGR valve. I REPAIRED IT MYSELF!. There have been other numerous issues with this car, but I digress. Most of the problems with this car started to occur right after the 60,000 warranty ran out. As of now, the engine is dead at 155,000 miles. Maintenance was done regularly according to schedule. Hyundai will never measure up to Toyota or Honda as durable vehicles. STAY AWAY FROM ALL HYUNDAI VEHICLES!!! JUNK CARS..............

Noise (kind of a rattle that increased when the AC/defrost/heater started and continued to run, noise is heard while driving - worse if motor has to increase going up a hill and then sometimes could be heard if motor had to slightly increase power) had been going on for some time. Took to the dealer on 6/3/16 with engine noise. Was told the AC needed replacing, was given a quote. A dealer service tech road tested the car and came back saying the problem was in the motor. The service manager presented me with the quote for the ac replacement. Had AC replaced (not with the dealer) and the noise was still there. Should have known better as the AC was cooling great before replacing. Had other mechanics try to identify the cause of the noise to no avail.
Now I get a notice concerning a first class action settlement involving this type engine is in the works. It list stalling, engine seizure, engine noise or oil light illumination to be included in the Settlement. Wonder if the unnecessary replacement of an perfectly working AC would qualify as other reasonable expenses? This would not have happened had it been diagnosed correctly by the local dealership service department. The settlement also includes the Powertrain Warranty for the engine short block assembly.
Only went to the dealer in an effort to NOT void any warranty. My assumption was the engine being part of the power train.

I believe this is a timing chain sensor issue but am not sure. Was there a recall for that issue?
