Driving home to South Florida from my in-laws in Charleston, SC. Most of the ride was normal until about an hour away from our home. At about the last 60 miles, a huge downpour occurred and traffic slowed to about 30 mph. Once rain let up and traffic resumed to normal speeds, the car had no pick up and would not go faster than 60 mph and the RPMs would stay below 2000. Pulled over at the nearest gas station and check oil and other fluids and everything was normal. Returned on the road for the remainder of the ride home but the same issue persisted. I called the dealer this morning and took the car in. Awaiting diagnostic test scheduled for 7/7/2020. There is a post #100 which is almost identical to what my story is. I know these engines are defective and there are recalls in place. The car is not safe! I have read stories that the engine completely shuts off while driving. I don’t want my car to get to this point. This is my third Hyundai and the cars have always been very reliable but if Hyundai does not fully fix this, it will be my last!

2014 Sonata with exactly 48900 miles. My wife was driving the vehicle and engine shuts off in the middle of the road while she was waiting for left turn light on the service road around 12 pm. She pushed the start button -- no start, no engine crank. nada. Ii drove to her from my office and did my own troubleshooting. re-seated the battery connections, checked the battery voltage, checked engine codes. checked fuses and relays -- nothing burned or blown. Engine has a smell of burnt wiring -- somewhere underneath the throttle body. It could be the starter motor or maybe the neutral safety switch or both .
Called Hyundai Assurance. I push the car ( yes "me" - singular ) for 500 feet to a parking lot to relieve the traffic we are causing while waiting for the tow truck. I was told that the truck will be there in 60 minutes. okay. 60 minutes in 100 degree weather -- should be ok. 60 minutes passed, no truck -- called Hyundai Assurance -- truck is 6 miles away, 10 minutes. okay, truck is almost here.. hooray!!... 10 minutes passed... nope, no truck. Called Hyundai Assurance again, got the same person on the phone -- "oh, truck is delayed for 85 minutes" -- nice. Tow truck finally arrived and towed the vehicle to the service area on 7/24/2019 around 330-4pm.
Walked to the service reception area, and was ignored for 10-15 minutes. had to call the attention of one of the sales staff for assistance.... after filling out paperwork -- I was informed that it will take 6 days before they can check on the car. Crap. I've left a couple of voice messages with the service department and with the general manager just to check on the status -- no callback -- AT ALL ( what happened to customer service?)
I have bought several vehicles with this dealership ( 2012 Hyundai Genesis Track, 2014 Hyundai Sonata SE and 2018 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0T) I am loyal customer with Hyundai-- but with this kind of service provided -- not sure if I am getting a Hyundai again.
So, finally after posting a review about their missteps -- the service department manager returned my call and told me the bad news....SEIZED ENGINE - wow --- 48900 miles and we have a broken engine -- I drove my 2001 Toyota Corolla SE 268,000 miles and it was still running strong when I sold it.
The good news is that -- it's covered by the 10 year or 100,000 mile warranty. The dealership will provide a rental and the repair/replacement should take 2 weeks (fingers crossed).

Car was purchased brand new back in Nov 2013, the car with 125K miles basically seized up on me in July 2017 approximately 71 miles from home. I was originally told that a new engine would be installed between 3 to 6 months which only took 2 weeks. My concerns are the safety of this vehicle due to the past and recent fires associated with this ongoing issue which neither Hyundai or Kia have addressed to date.

Well, I think at this point I have ranted enough...unless Hyundai reneges on any of the costs including one-way rental for being stranded at an airport 2 hours away from home. Anyway, I parked the car at a long-term lot and left on a trip. My return flight was 13 hours long so I was quite exhausted and wanted to get in the car and go. When I went to start it, nothing happened. I thought I had forgotten how to start it which is pretty easy- P or N gear, push the button. Still nothing. That was weird since all the lights, radio etc were working fine and the battery was only a month old. Another driver tried to help, but two hours and numerous You-Tube videos later I realized there was something else going on.
I had the car towed to the nearest Hyundai, who were really nice about everything. They called me a day later and said the engine had seized. That was a surprise since I didn’t know what I know now- about the history, recalls etc. Hyundai immediately accepted to pay for the costs and have put me in a lower-class Sonata but that’s fine since it’s a model up with some options though I miss my backing-up camera and just the feel of my car. It sucks that I can’t get reimbursed for the rental costs until the work is done and that might take a few months. The dealer says they’re back-ordered so to hang tight for up to 5 months for the turbo engine.
I still like the Sonata, overall, it’s a really good car, except when the engine becomes a big giant mime machine.

This grip is in regards to my 2014 Hyundai Sonata..
I had receive a recall notice from Hyundai about a recall for my 2014 Sonata which "could possibly" have a faulty engine due to debris in the engine. I had already just happened to have called earlier in the week to have my car brought in to the dealer for service because it started using oil, was acting funny when I accelerated, plus the odometer changed by itself it went from 37,783 (estimate) back to 29,000 on it's own.
The day before my appt I was driving my two small grandkids home when the car started jerking like it couldn't get any gas, then I heard a noise an saw huge amount of white/blue smoke came from behind the car. Scared me to death everyone around me was slamming on their brakes and stopped so I could get over to the side of the road. I was able to get the car to the dealer told them the problem so they took it in the back and then let me know the mechanic dropped the oil pan and sure enough there was the metal filings the recall notice said "might" be in the engine which restricts the oil flow to the engine.
So the service adviser took pictures of the oil pan and the engine filed a claim with Hyundai and within a few hours told me the claim was approved. GREAT I thought, they said you will get a rental car we will pay for. I said great so what is going to happen now, he goes I have no clue you were approved for a new engine but I was told by Corporate not to order the engine because they are still deciding what way they want to do this with these defective engines. I was told I will let you know what they decide, so after 2 wks no one called me so I called Hyundai Customer Svc and talked to Heather who said she would give me a claim number, she took down my story and info and said Hyundai Corporate would call me in 5 business days.
I did receive a call from from Corporate who took all my info, and listen to my concerns from me. She said she would be checking to see what the Calif lemon law was and would then turn my claim into the review board and they would decide what they would do so give them at least 2 wks. I told her the Calif Lemon law say's you have to resolve this issue in a timely manner, you either give me a new engine, give me a new car to replace the defective car or you give me ALL the money I paid for my car( I paid cash).
The reason I bought the Sonata was because of Hyundai's good reputation and excellent warranty. I found the car I like paid cash and drove off the lot in a ticking time bomb!! Since 2012 Hyundai has know the problem with the Theta ll engine but yet continued to sell these ticking time bombs to its customers. I was only 2 blocks from getting on the freeway with my 2 lil grandkids, God only know's what would have happened if the car engine went while driving.
So now I sit and wait with my car's faith being in the hands of a company that has allowed thousands of cars to be bought and driven off their lots knowing there was a problem. I'm afraid if they put a new engine in my car what is to say that it won't do the same thing. Then when it happens would it still be under warranty or not. I'm a 69 yr old woman who doesn't need the stress. I know the Calif Lemon Law say's the car company needs to take care of this problem in a timely manner well what is considered timely??
Shame on Hyundai for selling cars with the Theta ll engines that they knew were defective. Thanks to the whistler blower who let it be know Hyundai was well aware of the problem back in 2012. Thank God NHTSA got involved and forced Hyundai to issue a recall as they felt these cars being on the road with these defective engines were a safety hazard on the roads. I'm sharing my story and I hope other's who have had the same problem and knows how to get results will share with those of us who were effected. BTW in the same week my sonata engine went 6 other Sonata's were brought in for the same thing (metal filings in oil pan).

While driving to visit family on Christmas day 2015, halfway to my destination, my vehicle making noises under the hood. I pulled over to see if I could visibly notice a defect but I couldn't. About 5 miles later, my vehicle began losing power, all the lights on the dashboard came on, and I had to pull over. My car then completely died. Roadside assistance was called and my vehicle was towed to the nearest Hyundai which was still 100 miles from home. Because I had my children with me, we could not all fit into the tow truck so Highway Patrol was called to take us to the nearest gas station where we had to wait 2 hours for them to come and pick us up, al on Christmas day!
It was found that my engine oil had "metal shavings" in it. The first question asked of me was when I last had the oil changed. My response "Last month at the Hyundai dealership and 5,000 miles before that and 5,000 miles before that!" They were insinuating I had not kept up with maintenance on my vehicle. Because I bought and serviced my vehicle only through Hyundai, it was found to be covered under warranty and Hyundai paid for a rental. It took 62 days for them to replace my engine!

I have had this car for 1 YEAR. Also this car has recalls so I was driving down the road and it just stops. have had a oil change last week? So I called my insurance company and had my car towed to the dealership!!!! THEY say that if its COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY it will be fixed, no charge , and theyll get me a rental car, if not ill have to pay BUT MY ENGINE IS COVERED FOR 10 YEARS BECAUSE THESE CARS HAVE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS, honestly IM A FEMALE I DONT know that much about these cars MY HUSBAND IS OUT OF TOWN working and isnt here to help me, ITS A 2014 THIS IS COMPLETE BS!!!! all I have to say is if they dont fix it that 500$ payment I make everymonth will not be paid untill that car is FIXED!!!!! MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH, never had problems out of this car since I got it untill now and they are saying o like its no biggie but i bet tomorrow when they call it will be different. Had taken the vehicle into dealership twice for a no start issue. As the problem was intermittent they said there was nothing they could do. At 130,000 I started losing power. Took it in and they said I had no compression in one cylinder. Needed a new engine. Nothing they could do. Did not take engine apart. Submitted my oil change receipts on my insistence but still Hyundai had nothing to say except Too Bad....So Sad basically.
Bought the car as I travel on the highway to work each day and needed a reliable car. Have only had this car two years.

Never thought of engine replacement because it consumes all oil 2k miles before oil changes. No warning, no lights on, no noise, just stopped while driving.
