Bought this 2015 Hyundai Sonata from Carvana approx. a month ago and after only 2 weeks of owning it I started noticing a ticking sound when going up a hill. It kinda reminded me of the sound a roller coaster makes as it pulls you up a hill. A grinding, clicking sound. Today it is making the sound even while it idles. I am not the original owner and do not have service records on this vehicle, I am the second owner. Will I have a leg to stand on at the dealership under the factory warranty? Carvana has a limited warranty under Silver Rock, but I am sure that Silver rock will want to pass the buck on to Hyundai. Does anyone have any advice for me. I am so stuck! I owe 6 years on this car and it is going to blow!

when you start the engine it sounds like all the lifters are ticking, loudly. We love the car but for only 23,000 miles on it , it shouldnt be making noise. The car runs fine. but noisy, reminds me of my lawnmower. Hope someone can tell me why it does this. thank you. I have a 2012 Hyundai Tucson with the same motor and it sounds fine.

I was really excited when i bough this Hyundai Sonata 2015. It had only 23 k and drove nice. After a little while it started having a few annoying issues. I noticed it was accelerating really slow and engine was loud as well. I took it to the dealer and they had replaced the cam actuator as part of the recall but it had no positive effect on it. It is struggling going up in hills and engine gets louder and louder over time. The oil and filter change was done a few days ago with no change. I will take it back to the dealer again in a few days. Hopefully they can get it to taken care of during visit.

This 2.0 sounds like a turbo diesel at idle. This is far louder then any non modified 4 cylinder I have ever driven. I was told by the dealer it is the high volume fuel pump, and that this is normal for the 2015 2.0. I find this concerning because my 2014 2.0 had little to no engine noise. The dealership reported no fix, and that I just have to deal with it.

We just bought a one owner 2015 Sonata Sport as our 2013 Sonata Limited was written off when we were rear ended. Same engine so I know what the 2.4L sounds like and with the new car having 90,000km less I thought it would be better. Highway driving is fine but when the engine is under load even at low speeds it had a moderate ticking. Sounds like the lifters to me.
I have 28 days to figure out what this problem is so I can harass Hyundai. But even an engine replacement that I have heard that you MUST buy all new OEM parts attached to the engine for the recall. Hyundai is making money on their recalls?! Almost makes sense not to fix the problem. I’m not sure yet about the diagnosis but I’ll have the dealership and my mechanic that I actually trust look at the problem.
Update from Sep 15, 2021: The pulley tensioner assembly needed to be replaced. Not just the pulley on the tensioner. You could put pressure on the idler itself when the engine was running and the ticking would stop even under load. It’s an easy way to check if that is the problem.
