Drivers side seat belt does not retract properly. If i pull it out a little too far when buckling then it will just hang there instead of retracting snugly so it provides the same amount of safety as having no seat belt on at all. Every time that I took my car to the dealer for different fixes I always brought that up and they always overlooked it and never did fix it and now my extended warranty is out and it's still not fixed even though it was like that the day that I bought it and I started complaining about it that very first week.

My Hyundai Sonata 2015 built in Alabama in on December 13, 2014. I recently found out that a problem I've been having for the last five years with my driver's seatbelt not retracting when it is disengaged, was a recall issue for Hyundai Sonatas 2011 through May 2014. I also found out when I contacted the NHTSA, that an auto manufacturer has the discretion to determine which car models are anticipated to be affected. If you look at the complaint log for Hyundai Sonatas 2015 4DR FWD, this seatbelt retraction issue is specified at least 15 times dating from Sept 5, 2015 to April 3, 2023. Below is my experience with this same issue, which is still ongoing, and has affected my safety and confidence in my car. My car has less than 45,000 miles on it. Around 2018, my driver side seat belt started to periodically not retract automatically when it was disengaged from the buckle. I needed to start manually feed the seat belt back into its mounting or it would just lay on the floor. I brought the issue to the service tech at a dealership in March 2018 and the problem was not even recorded on the invoice and was dismissed as not evident to the service tech. It was also not recorded with other mechanical issues at all or honestly in my car's official service record.) The problem continued and started getting worse during in 2020, but I was not driving much due to the pandemic. I brought the issue to the attention at a different dealership in June 2022, during servicing for a recall campaign and a continuously lit check engine light. The seatbelt retraction issue was verified but I was told I would have to pay $700 to have it repaired. No effort was made by either of the service dealerships to address the safety issue experienced by Hyundai Sonata 2015 cars with the exact same issue identified for Hyundai Sonata 2014 cars or Hyundai Sonata cars manufactured at the same plant. Clearly, the problem is still not addressed.

Front Driver Side Seat Belt does not retract to original position when seat belt unlatched. Also seat belt does not lock into restraint position when brakes are applied and remains loose even when brakes applied heavily during emergency/urgent braking. Dealer said it is not a safety issue, it is a wear issue and owner would have to pay for full replacement.

The front seat belts are not functioning; they do not retract, nor do they lock when quickly pushed. They both do lock into the buckle, but that's it. I checked the recall status for such a problem and found that many years and models of Hyundai Sonata's seatbelts were recalled for exactly this same reason; however, this particular year of Sonata was not, even though it is the same issue. In late February/early March, I contacted our local dealer in Reno, to no avail, and then contacted the national customer support for Hyundai. This was forwarded up the ladder and received a case number: [XXX]. We were asked to take it to our local dealer for a diagnostic review, which was completed on March 22. The result, showing the exact same malfunction, was then sent to the Hyundai case worker. Numerous phone calls and emails to her have gone unanswered since then. Meanwhile, we are stuck with an unsafe vehicle, which has the same seatbelt safety issue that resulted in a recall of over one million Hyundai vehicles. Hyundai states the seatbelts are past the warranty period. Seven years is how long they think seatbelts should last? Seat belts are not retracting properly and are unsafe, not functioning. Dealership refuses to repair the drivers side seat belt which is the worse, for less than $700 this is ridiculous. Many recalls on Sonata of prior years regarding seat belts and it needs to be extended to include 2015. This has been a problem for several months. I am shocked Hyundai wont repair what is clearly a manufacturer defect.

The contact owned a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. While the contact's wife was driving 51 mph, another vehicle collided head on into the contact's vehicle. The front passenger air bag failed to deploy. The rear middle seat passenger suffered severe spinal cord injuries (internal decapitation). The driver sustained injuries to the shoulder, ankle, foot wrist, hand, and hips. The contact was sitting in the front passenger seat and suffered injuries to the head, leg, ankle, abrasions, a blood clot, lung failure, a vertebral fracture, a broken arm/forearm, and wrist. The seat belt severed the contact's artery. The driver of the other vehicle also sustained severe injuries. Medical attention was required for all occupants and they were transported to the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle and the rear middle seat passenger in the contact's vehicle later succumbed to their injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard where the police and insurance company inspected the vehicle and confirmed that it was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000....updated 05/03/17

My 2015 Hyundai Sonata has been back and forth to the dealer. Every time I turn around the this car has a recall. I don't even know about the recall until a light pops up or I have a weird noise while driving. One time the car just felt weird while driving and I went to get it checked out and found out about the recalls. First seatbelt, then engine line needed replacing, then another part needed replacing, then another. After going there Monday for for the engine immobilizer, the brake hold light being I was told something was replaced, and oh a recall was handled. Then to come back Friday and after 4-5 hours be told the ABS has to be replaced, meaning I have to come back because it has to be ordered. Then, after leaving, now the tire pressure light is on, and there appears to be enough air in each tire!! so I don't know what is going on. Note to self, don't by a car before the year it comes out. Bought this 2015 in 2014. I really think the manufacturer needs to notify consumers of these recalls. I shouldn't find out about them only after bringing the car in for an issue or an oil change.

Me and my wife were out driving in traffic when I had to stop abruptly. Her seatbelt did not lock in place and she injured her neck. We did not seek medical attention, due to her not wanting to. This poses a serious health and safety risk for anyone in my passenger seat. After this event, we drove to an isolated area to test if the seatbelt would lock at speeds of 30, 25, 15, and 10. The seat belt did not lock into place causing my wife body to move forward.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata sport. While driving at approximately 45 mph, the contact noticed that the seat belt on front driver side would tighten independently. The contact stated that this was a recurring failure. The vehicle was driven to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 3.
