My 2016 Sonata 129k miles gave out on me a bit ago. The oil light would turn on briefly when turning or at a full stop. I was having to get oil changes around 2500 miles instead of around 3000 miles because the low oil light kept up lighting up early. When I was on the freeway the engine light came on, and my car started shaking like one of cylinders misfired. My car was having trouble accelerating and slowed down from 70 to 50 mph. I always took my car to the dealership for its recommended maintenance and always did oil changes at the recommended mileage. I did everything right in maintaining my car, and it fails like this. I don't want to buy a Hyundai ever again, and I'm telling everyone I know that I really don't recommend this brand. Go for a more reliable company!

Engine light came on in the morning when leaving for work. Checked oil. No oil on dipstick. Called dealer as I had extended warranty and umbrella policy. They said it would take 3 months to get it checked out. Called the GM of the Des Moines dealership and he got them to get a tow truck and rental that day. They called me and said the engine plugs had blown out sometime. There was no oil on the ground in my garage so I could have been driving for a while the previous day without oil and no engine light. They didn't check the rings or any other aspect of the engine and just filled it back up with oil and said it was fine.

This was 500 miles after they replaced the cracked oil pan. I ended up trading it in on a new car because I was tired of spending days at the dealership. They basically robbed me of thousands of dollars, and the next owner gets to have fun with this lemon of a car. Sure it looks nice but this engine is garbage. Started out at 35mpg and ended up 16mpg, something is seriously wrong.

Car was towed home (thanks to triple A) and dropped in the driveway where it sat for a year.

2 recall notices showed up during that year, which didn't matter post engine failure. I was unable to drive it to any dealership... I got a mobile mechanic to try to get it running. He said "you have a dead head". I drove it to local mechanic, verified the "dead head" diagnosis. He was unable to order parts due to Hyundai parts being warrantied.

I made an appointment with dealership, and had it towed there. $350 for diagnostic. Surprise! A deadhead diagnosis. The DEALERSHIP WANTS $13,000.00 for a new engine block!

Come to find out, the recall notices (after the failure) were to prevent what happened to my engine. And now I get to pay for insurance, and payments on a car for 2 more years while it rots in my driveway. Thanks Hyundai!

Sonata 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission

I have had nothing but problems from this piece of crap. Transmission started sputtering 3 months after getting it. The oil burns like no tomorrow. I'm talking a quart every 100 miles. The dealership even though I paid around 8,000 for extended warranty still wont fix anything. Do yourself a favor and avoid Hyundais.

My car is at Coconut Creek Hyundai. It's been there 7 days and has not been touched. They are estimating about 30 days. I guess this will be my last Hyundai. It's a shame - this is my third one. I really liked it.
