Sonata LX 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,000 miles

Hyundai service writer should have known this symptom is part of this models operation normally.

They wanted 165 to diagnose it. I would have been pissed if they took the money then told me it was normal.

Thank you!!!

Sonata Sport

  • Automatic transmission
  • 63,200 miles

Bought used 2 yrs ago and it's been working fine until recently - the last 2 weeks. It's sluggish, acts like it wants to just stop at times and the pick up is slow and turtle like. How ironic would it be to have the SAME ISSUE AS MY LAST SONATA??!!! My friend mechanic just says he's waiting for the engine to blow like last time. :P This car has such low miles it's a shame the engine is done for.

I had a 2013 Sonata that the engine just died in while driving home from work one day. It literally went only 20 mph and was enough to get it to the dealer. Thank God the thing was still under the extended warranty. They kept that one for a month and said they'd never seen such a thing. This was in 2019. They fixed whatever, I never knew, and I turned around and traded it in. It only had 89K on it too. On a Nissan.

Well here we are. I traded that Nissan in on this 2016 Sonata and now I'm having the same weird engine thing. Unfortunately I owe on this one but the market is good so I am looking at Toyotas again.

I still like the Sonata but until they FIX THE ENGINES I am going to take a hard pass and go back to Toyota.

Looking at a used 4Runner tonight!

Sonata SE 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,000 miles

I've had this problem fixed so we thought, I took it to the dealer and they said it needed a tune up. That was $600.00 dollars, and now 3 months later, I have the same problem. So it wasn't that the plugs needed to be changed, the oil light didn't come on and there are no visible leaks - so where is the oil going? I feel like they just didn't do a diagnostic test they just played with our money. They clearly lied and didn't fix the actual problem. Hyundai needs to be held responsible for this, not the consumer. I will never ever buy another one of these cars again .

rough idle and poor acceleration

Took the car in on January 22nd with the Check Engine Light On and the Vehicle Diagnostics Message ..."A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected. A full system check is recommended soon." Symptoms include very poor acceleration, idle speed of 1700 rpm, lots of white smoke from the exhaust, and the car moves forward from an up slope position even though the gas is not pressed. Quite dangerous to drive.

The service tech other than doing a standard 19,000 mile service - fuel system treatment, filter, engine oil and gasket plug change, also did a scan. The code was P001000 - "Found the E-CVVT cover to NE full of oil, found oil plug to have shifted and leaking oil into E-CVVT cover causing code and contaminated cover".

The parts are on SPECIAL order, but they were unable to tell me when they will have them in. So have to wait an indefinite time ... Isn't there a factory in Alabama ? Would they be able to forecast/estimate some sort of delivery time. 1. 24360-2GGB0 Cover Assembly 2. 24351-2GGA1 Plug

The service department at Fairfax Hyundai told me that these unavailable parts have nothing to do with the engine idling at high RPMs, the poor acceleration and the excessive white exhaust smoke. SO it was OK to still drive around with the car and the check engine light on plus with the vehicle diagnostics constantly reporting an ECS problem. They have the car, I have a loaner. It's been a month and still no ETA for the parts.

Logically, the E-CVVT (Constant Variable Valve Timing) would affect the idling and acceleration wouldn't it ?

I am wondering if there is an additional problem with the engine which they either have not been able to check or have not discovered.
