Sonata

  • 19,599 miles
The oil plug fell out and seized the engine. I bought the car and drove it lightly for 2 days through city streets and highways. Right before the engine seized. The check hybrid systems light came on, followed by the oil light, then the check engine light (within the span of around 45 seconds). After the lights the car became unresponsive to the gas pedal and slowed to a halt. After getting it towed to a Hyundai dealership the next day, they called and said that te oil plug is missing and it caused the whole engine to seize and need a complete replacement. After researching I've found many owners of 2017 Hyundai sonota hybrids to have had similar issues with the plug falling out. I believe it should be looked into getting recalled.

Since app. 50000 mile mark engine has consumed oil and its increasing as mileage goes up its getting worse, having to check oil prior to going anywhere now, one time oil light came on had to put 2 quarts in at an auto zone store. Have checked found no leaks and have had car on hoist engine running with no leaks showing. Vehicle has been serviced for 2 recalls on the engine stalling and RPM slowing making car practically undriveable. I was told to drive car into dealership for recall using side roads as RPM would only go to 2000. I think that action may have caused the problem I am now having.

I exited the freeway on buchanan in albany, ca and wait at the red light. As the light turned green I tried pressing on the peddle. I got no response from my car and it felt like my car was completely shut off. Quickly I put my car in park and turn my key to the off position I didn't feel my car lose any power at all it was like it was already off radio wasn't working anymore either. I turned the key to crank my car back on and it starts up immediately. I've had this same problem happen to me 3 times now twice in the same exact spot. The last time it happened my engine light turned on shortly after than it disappeared. My transmission went out in the first car I owned so I'm 1000% percent sure that wasn't the issue. I had to get the tranny on my first car replaced twice I'm very knowledgeable that stuff. My question is what can this be? I've heard about Hyundai engines catching on fire. My daughter was in the car two of those times so that's pretty scary to me.

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4L gdi engine only has 14,689 miles as of today 18 September 2020. It is consuming too much oil and coolant. My engine oil is about 1 1/2 quarts low, with no oil leaks. I had the oil changed at 12,600 miles. Also, coolant is at low level and I haven't driven car much since April 2020 due to covid-19 shut down. No coolant leaks anywhere around the engine, housing or inside. I cannot figure why the oil and coolant are low. My last scheduled maintenance included oil and filter change as well as top off all fluids.

While accelerating, especially up inclines, I would hear a knocking sound, feel vibrations, the check engine light would come on and the acceleration would not work. I would coast for a little bit (up to about a minute) before the acceleration would work again properly. This causes a very hazardous situation as other vehicle behind are still attempting to accelerate while I can not. This has happened to me at least 5 times in the last month and a half. The manufacturers service center that I took the vehicle to said that they couldn't reproduce the issue so there is "nothing wrong" with the vehicle.

My 2017 Sonata has been stalling for no reason. Sone time while moving and sometime while stopped like at a light. I think this is a big safety matter! I have not called a dealer I don't have a lot of money to have it looked at I just lost my job due to this covid19 crap. Not sure what to do. I just know that it is not safe and it frightens me.

Just before 50,000 miles car started using 1/2 a quart of oil every 2500-3000 miles. Car now has 116K miles and is up to 2+ quarts every 2 weeks. Have brought it up and questioned service department at reliable Hyundai in springfield mo, and they told me it was normal to use up to a quart every 1000 miles because of the low tension rings they use to get fuel mileage! I have emailed them today, and am waiting a response.

Car gives warning message to "immediately shut off the car to prevent damage ".... this has happened numerous times and Hyundai doesn't seem to have a fix, and doesn't think its a safety issue. This is a safety issue particularly when you are in heavy traffic with no place to move over to shut off the car.

After a tire change the hazard light and tire light came on. I was advised to take it to the shop and see if the sensor needs to be reset. I took it in a shop and the tire light went away but the hazard light remained. After about a week with the hazard light on, I was driving in the morning around 7:30am the car started to brake itself while driving about 30mph on an austin town street. I pulled over due to risk of getting rear ended. I was able to drive about 10 feet before it did it again and I parked. The "check hybrid engine" light then came on. I sat for about 20 min and tried to turn it on and the "check hybrid battery light came on again and this time the car wouldnt turn on. I called a tow truck and had them tow it to happy hybrid in austin tx and was advised it may be my hybrid battery generator as my hybrid battery was at 5%. they could not fix it but it should be covered under warranty and I had to have it towed to the Hyundai dealership in South austin tx on South ih-35. It has been there now for 2 weeks and I am without a vehicle. The dealership stated this may be related to 2 recalls I have on my vehicle but they are not sure. I purchased this car February 2018 and it is now March 2020. Only 2 years.

While driving on tx 1604 highway doing 70 mph my Sonata jolted and lost acceleration and the engine light came on. I attempted to accelerate by putting my foot all the way down on the gas peddle, but my car did not accelerate. I had to put my emergency lights on and exit the highway to avoid being rear ended by other vehicles that maintained speed. This same scenario has occurred on 5 different occassions. Hyundai dealership(s) have given multiple diagnosis and currently doing oil consumption tests. Two of three oil consumption tests confirm that at 1,000 miles my vehicle uses 2 quarts of oil. I have been fortunate to exit the highway safely and not have an accident. My vehicle is at dealer again and waiting to hear further information on what steps the dealer will take to fix issue and safety concerns. I have all dealership documents as evidence. This issue has been ongoing since Sept 2019 and it is now Feb 2020. I also have written Hyundai corporate and received a claim #, but they stated they could not help me since the vehicle is not with them to check and they trust their highly trained mechanics to resolve my issues.

Sonata

  • 55,000 miles
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 65 mph, the safety mode indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. Also, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to exceed 60 mph and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to team Hyundai (located at 22514 three notch rd, lexington park, md 20653, (301) 880-4120) where it was determined that metal shavings were found and the engine needed to be replaced. After four months of the vehicle being serviced at the dealer, the contact was informed that the wiring was changed; however, the engine was not replaced. On November 8, 2019, while driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard an abnormal noise and the safety mode indicator illuminated again. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was determined that due to the oil consumption, the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer stated that the contact needed to drive 1,000 miles and then check the oil consumption. The failure recurred on November 23, 2019. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 55,000.
