I was dropping my wife off at work and the steering wheel locked up. I had to pull over and shut the car off and turn it back on and it went back to normal. This is the 2nd time this has happen. I've tried contacting Hyundai about it because they can not recreate it in the shop - it's nothing they can do. I looking into trying to do a class action suit to get this fixed or recalled or replace the whole car. This is a serious problem - I'm just glad our kid wasn't in the car when this happen. CALL HYUNDAI EVERYDAY UNTILL THEY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Update from Sep 7, 2021: This morning the my car locked up again as I was about to turn out of the parking lot after I dropped my wife off at work. So I have doing research and it seems about 2 years ago these Sonata have been doing this the video is a mechanic who has said that it is the steering collar that needs to be replace and Hyundai needs to do a Recall to replace them.

My 2017 sonata has a problem with the steering. I took in to the Hyundai shop and the problem was basically ignored. ALLEN TURNER HYUNDAI. IT IS IN THE SHOP AGAIN AND THE PROBLEM IS MUCH WORSE. HOPE THEY CAN FIX IT.

I purchased this car in February. After taking ownership, I noticed when it was warm inside the car (via the floor heater) when driving like normal, the steering would stick (which I did not notice during test drive). At any point in the turn, once the steering wheel was stopped then when trying to continue to turn, it would stick until enough force was applies to break the stick. This was very noticeable on the interstate where it could cause lane deviation or over compensation to break the stick of the steering.
The first attempt at the dealer was to replace the steering module, that didn't work.
Second attempt was to replace the motor at this point I had done my own research and advised my service advisor that other had to have the Column replaced, so they replaced the steering motor stating it can get dead spots in the coil of the motor, which did not work.
Third and final attempt was to replace the steering column (shocker) and that fixed the problem. For me the problem was most noticeable when the interior of the car was warm either via the heat or sitting in the sun for a while.
I hope this is helpful to someone else if they are having the same issue.
