Sonata Hybrid

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

We bought Hybrid Sonata brand new and the problems started just after one month. They had my car in the garage for a month and they started fixing a number of problems they told us. They gave the car back after a month and it broke down 3 times and we had to tow the car at our own cost to the house twice and to the dealership. They are saying it is not under warranty and they are asking 4,400.00"plus and they have the car in their dealership and we had read all he reviews online and we know all the challenges we have been facing.

We are very frustrated and we need your help to resolve this issues.

Please any help will be appreciated. Not sure who to contact in regards to such a major issues.

Regards,

Update from Jul 25, 2017: The car was bought in Massachusetts and they are stating this car is not included in the recall. But it has issues since we bought. They had the car in their workshop for a month and we were very frustrated. But we expected the problems to be fixed. The dealership we bought the car is closed and the paperwork for repairs is under investigation.

They told us they are looking into this matter and it is second day now and we do not have a car and they did not give us a rental car.

Sonata Hybrid Limited Hybrid

  • Automatic transmission
  • 18,800 miles

My 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited is coming up with a warning signal "Hybrid Safety Warning Do Not Drive". This has happened on three separate occasions. The common factor has been that I was driving the car on a 95+ degree F day and it happens when I pull in to park after driving for approximately 30 minutes. The car sounds an alarm and the message comes up on the dash above the steering wheel. The car gets stuck in park. I turn it off and restart it 30 minutes later after a cool off period. The local Hyundai dealership and Hyundai Customer Care Line cannot provide explanation or fix. Hyundai seems unwilling and unable to run this issue up to their design engineers to find out what the light is designed to alert owners and mechanics about. I also checked with a dealership in Arizona to see if they have seen the problem since it appears to be related to hot days. They have never seen the alert either. They have not had any heat related hybrid or on-board computer problems. So what is this? Is it just a defective car with safety issue that cannot be resolved?

Update from Sep 6, 2013: My Hyundai dealer was finally able to duplicate the problem of "Hybrid Safety Warning Do Not Drive" on the Hybrid Technology Display. That didn't give them any clues on what the problem was but at least they could justify further work on the car to diagnose. The Tech Line gave them a test to run on my lithium battery and Active Air Flap and those tested out fine. Thank goodness. Through pure luck a Hybrid Task Team came on-site at my dealership to look at a couple of other hybrids having unrelated problems. They have been looking at my car yesterday and today. They diagnosed that the PRNDL Neutral Safety Switch needed to be replaced. They changed that out yesterday and are calibrating the car today. I am happy to have a diagnosis although I am not certain that the PRNDL switch has anything to do with the hybrid system so I am still confused about the error message. Fingers crossed this fix gets me back on track. Number one lesson I learned here, keep my smartphone handy in my car to take a video of the display and beeping sounds the next time something like this occurs. I am not positive if this would have given them reason to put more effort toward my diagnosis early on or not but it would have made me feel more validated with my complaint and maybe have given them more information to go on in their diagnosis process. Second lesson, there is such a thing as a Hybrid Task Team that can do advanced diagnostics on Hyundai Hybrids. I recommend that if a couple of days goes by with no success in addressing a hybrid issue with your local dealer and the Tech Line they access, then ask for the Hybrid Task Team.
