About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Yesterday, my wife car, suddenly started to sharply to the right, when her hold on steering wheel relaxed. I tested it. It is not an alignment problem. It is a sudden and obvious taking over of the steering by the car. I took it to my mechanic. He told me that he and none of his certified mechanics have ever seen this problem, and did not know what was wrong and I should contact Hyundai as perhaps there was a recall or service bulletin on this condition. I did that, but was told that I would have to bring it there to be diagnosed. My concern is not so much for my car. I don't know if I want to spend dealership type money to fix the car. My concern is the safety of others. My wife was traveling about 20 mph when this happened, and was able to avid hitting another car. If it happened when she was traveling 60 mph on a four lane highway, it would have been a major disaster. I felt that I needed to bring the problem to your attention, to possibly protect others. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER ADVISED THE PART NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR WAS NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION; THEREFORE, THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DECLINED ANY ASSISTANCE.

I first noticed white smoke coming from the back of my SUV. I pulled into a store parking lot and tried to park. My main brakes failed. I then tried using my emergency brake. It too failed. White smoke started coming through the vents so I turned them away from me and tried shifting to park with no success. I then pressed the main brake again and was able to shift to park. Then someone in the parking lot yelled, "your car's on fire! get out!" I grabbed my keys, cell phone and work badge and as I was getting out, black smoke began filling the cabin. Store employees tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers with no success. Within 10 minutes the front half of the SUV was engulfed in flames! I have no clue what could have caused the brakes to fail nor the reason for the engine to catch fire! I have video and photos for viewing.

After having a service on my 2010 Hyundai Tucson, 2 days later the ESC indicator light came on, and the dbc indicator light came on, and the shifter was hard to put into gear. Took it in and they changed the shifter. About 2 weeks later the same two lights came on again, only this time when you pressed on the gas the RPM would shoot up but the car wouldn't move, and the brakes were locked. The car was towed and the map sensor was changed. When I was told the car was fixed I came in to test drive the car and the check engine light was on. I did not take the car. The next day the car was given back to me and the light was off. 2 weeks later the same problem happened again. I was told that the brakes needed to be bled, after a few days the car was given back to me. 4 weeks later the same problem occurred again, and the car was towed, another part was changed again. I know that the shop I am working with is trying their best to fix the problem, but the car is scary to drive. At any time the ESC and dbc light will come on, and the brakes will lock, and when you press the gas the rmp will shoot up and the car won't move. Twice now this has happened to be on a main highway and I do good to pull over before someone hits me.
