This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Hyundai dealer.
I've taken my Tucson in to the Hyundai dealer in Springfield/Eugene, OR twice for the surging problem we have experienced about two dozen times. They have returned it to me each time saying that they cannot find a problem or duplicate the issue. They add that I am the only one they have ever heard of reporting this issue.
It is a major safety issue that Hyundai needs to address. I've noticed it happening more often when we are pulling our small trailer or when I am taking a sharper curve. My husband has experienced this issue too. I'm afraid that it's going to hurt us or someone else one day.

My husband just brought our car home from the dealer for an oil change, window repair and complained about the power surges. Well, they say they couldn't find anything wrong with it as far as the power surges, yet on his way home it surged again and again. This is getting ridiculous, it seems to be getting worse. This is killing our gas mileage and it is down right scary.

My Hyundai Tucson sometimes has power surges. I have especially noticed it when I am trying to make a U-turn, It feel like it has stalled out and then when you step on the gas it surges forward. This can be quite scary. This has happened since I bought the car new. I am never quite sure when it is going to happen but it has happened at least 30 times.

At 10,000km while traveling at any speed, the car would redline for a second and then go back to normal rpm. At 90,000 km the car started to surge sporadically causing a violent jerk or jump resulting in a period of no acceleration and/or power. This problem was very dangerous and problematic as I was unable to drive my car on the highway, up steep hills, over long distances and on the freeway. While under warranty at 98,000km I took it in and was told there was no problem. At 104,000km the car experienced an engine seizure resulting in $10,000 of repairs of which Hyundai decided to cover a few parts to rebuild the engine.
