Greetings, I have had issues with the Hyundai Tucson 2017 I own for many months. Issues include among others an abnormal knocking noise from the engine, reduced engine power and/or hesitation, burning smell, oil leaking, and smoke coming out of the engine, misfires, and other issues. It happened many times on the highway and almost caused accidents and the last time it happened, the vehicle was towed, and recently the smoke coming from the engine forced me to pull over. I reported the issue to the dealer but they didn't recall or address the issue. The car has been maintained properly over time and now I fear for my life. It is totally unfair that about 100k of this brand have been recalled for the same issue, in my case it is just after I finished to pay in full the vehicle. I seek your support to have it addressed for safety

The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The battery warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the spark plugs. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 86,000.

The contact added oil and stated that frequent oil changes were needed. There was no indication of an oil leak. While driving over a bridge, the vehicle failed to accelerate over 25 MPH. The check engine and oil warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that oil was being burned by the piston rings. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who performed an oil consumption test. The dealer informed the contact that there was an oil leak. The vehicle then failed to start. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

My transmission has failed fully. It cannot even reverse. I took my car into Hyundai several times to check on the issue and they said the same thing, that the transmission slipping is a standard issue for dual clutch. I told them over and over that this is different. I did some research as to how to have them cover it and have it changed but the dealership said nothings wrong. Fast forward and now my cars transmission is fully gone and it probably won-??t be covered when I know that it should have been part of the recall ! Just this year I-??ve spent $5000 on repairs for this vehicle and now I-??m looking at another $5000 for only a 7 year old vehicle. If that does not constitute a lemon I don-??t know what does.

In August 2024, the engine of the vehicle suddenly started making a very loud knocking noise, with no previous warning lights. We did not feel it was safe to drive. We saw online that a recall was underway by Hyundai for 2017 Tucsons due to problems with the rod bearings, where metal spreads throughout the engine. There is the potential for the engine to catch fire, and a complete engine replacement is recommended. This was confirmed by the dealership where we bought the vehicle, Boucher Hyundai of Waukesha, which told us they are replacing the engines in many of these vehicles. However, our VIN was not included in the recall, although the problem is identical to what is described in the recall. We had the car towed to the dealership; after confirming the problem, the dealership filed a claim with Hyundai seeking to add our VIN to the recall. We included all of the maintenance records since we bought the vehicle in January 2021 with 64K miles. Hyundai rejected the claim, citing a gap in the maintenance records from 64,000-124,000 miles. The dealership questioned that, since they had submitted our maintenance records and there were no gaps. Hyundai again denied the claim, citing a gap in the maintenance records from 17,000-29,000 miles - before we owned the vehicle. We called Hyundai customer service seeking an explanation; they said that the decision is made by Hyundai Motor America, a different entity, which only the dealership can contact, not vehicle owners. The customer service rep's only suggestion was to file a claim with your agency. The vehicle is parked and undriveable; it is available for inspection.

The car suddenly stopped accelerating. There were no signs that something was wrong prior. I was driving on the highway when I felt a loss of power, then my check engine light started blinking. The car entered -??limp mode-?? and the engine started knocking. The code it was showing was for a knock sensor, I replaced that and it still would not accelerate. There is something wrong with the rod bearings and I was told by the dealership that this is a common problem with the type of engine they use in these vehicles.

The engine developed a knocking sound at 97,018 miles. When it was checked, it did not have any oil in it at all, regardless of there not being an oil leak in the system. The car received regular service. When we took it to Hyundai they did a test and confirmed that it was burning oil. This engine malfunction put my [XXX] daughter, the primary driver, at risk for engine failure while driving it. The engine light and knocking sound happened with no warning. Yes, the problem was confirmed by the Reed Hyundai of Kansas City. They told us that the car needs a new engine and that they bear no responsibility for the malfunction. The engine lights and sounds happened simultaneously. The vehicle was immediately stopped and towed to the dealership. Car is using an abnormally large amount of oil. I reported to Hyundai. They sent me to a Hyundai dealership for an Oil Consumption Test. They confirmed that I do not have an oil leak under the automobile. The dealer is telling me -??it-??s completely NORMAL TO BURN THROUGH 1 QUART OF OIL FOR EVERY 1,000 MILES-??. That would leave my automobile with only two quarts of oil after driving 3,000 miles. The owner-??s manual does not state any of this. Now I am paying a significant amount of money on Oil Consumption Tests of which they are telling me I might need several before they MIGHT fix the problem. This 2017 Hyundai Tucson is one of the models and years affected.

I change the oil every 2000 miles and use what it states. Second oil change that noticed the oil drained out of the vehicle was close to nothing. First of all no warning indication oil was that low. It vibrates when it-??s still and when you accelerate it tugs. Took it to the dealership where purchased extended warranty. Temporary fix is combustion cleaning with re seat piston rings then a valve cleaning and pcv replacement. Permanent solution replace the engine which warranty won-??t cover since it-??s technically not broken. Charging me ridiculous amount money for temporary fix. What if the oil goes else where or doesn-??t notified low oil. It can catch on fire or all of sudden stops. I have my two babies with me in the car always it-??s our family car. Vehicle has been inspected by dealership not inspected by police insurance representatives or others. No indication no warning signs pop up of low oil. It-??s consuming too much oil which it-??s going to other places in the engine which can cause fire risk. I-??m trying to prevent the engine cause a fire or risk to myself or my family.

Was driving down highway and vehicle lost power and shut off. Brought car to mechanic shop they ran a diagnostic and tore down the engine to see what the problem was. They found the problem was with oil consumption and carbon buildup. Oil was leaking through the pistons, piston rings into the combustion chamber, which in part was causing oil to go through the exhaust system. They found oil in the exhaust pipes and the catalytic converter and the exhaust manifold. The catalytic converter had to be replaced because it was clogged with all the oil that was leaking through the exhaust system from the combustion chamber. They found carbon buildup on the pistons, the piston rings and inside the combustion chamber

The contact stated that the vehicle was unoccupied and parked at the residence for a couple of days, he received a call from a neighbor informing that there was a fire at his residence. The contact was not home at the time and upon arrival, he observed the vehicle engulfed in flames. The fire then quickly spread from the vehicle to the stand-alone garage and driveway causing damage. The contact and a neighbor attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed by the insurance company to the salvage lot where a forensic specialist was pending an investigation per the manufacturer and was yet to produce any information. The contact mentioned that the vehicle burned leaving only the framing remains. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
