2017 Hyundai Tucson's should be taken off the road. I purchased my vehicle in February of 2020, and the car had about 45K miles on it at this point. For the most part it was a good car, and it didn't have any issues until September 2021, when I started the notice the oil was running out in between oil changes. It was not leaking nor was it burning off. So I took it to a few Hyundai dealerships and they couldn't figure out what it was and suggested I pay for an engine clean out just to see if that helps. Well, I didn't, because paying upwards to $500.00 "just to see" if that helps is a little freaking crazy and Hyundai refused to help because I was the second owner of the vehicle and it was over 66K miles at that point.

So this was about March/April of 2022 that the Hyundai dealership suggested the engine clean out and in July 2022, the catalytic converter died. A catalytic converter is supposed to last 10 years and better and it only lasted 5 years on the Tucson I was driving, most likely because the oil was leaking into the catalytic converter. Rather than pay for the part which was only available through the retailer which would have been incredibly expensive, I opted to trade it in for a Subaru and I had to roll over about $5300.00 from the previous balance on the Tucson.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY A 2017 HYUNDAI TUCSON, NO MATTER HOW GOOD OF A DEAL YOU THINK IT IS. This was my third Hyundai vehicle and my last. They will never get my money again and they shouldn't get yours either.

Tucson 2.0

  • Automatic transmission

Driving home from Oklahoma to Texas on Hwy 75 and all the sudden the car appeared to down shift to a lower gear and lost power. I pulled over thinking I was going to see smoke, fluid leaking or something. But nothing. I got back into the car and that is when I noticed that there was a loss of power especially trying to go up hill and the car was shifting hard especially when I tried to get it up to 70-75 miles per hour. When I would push the gas peddle it would rev up to about 4-5 rpms but never get any power and never would shift to higher gear. I drove the last hour of my drive around 60 mph and praying it would make it up the inclines.

Most dealerships were booked until late June or even July and I finally found a dealership 35 miles away. I made it to the dealership. First they said it was the spark plugs, but then I insisted they drive the car and try to make it up a hill or incline. They did and said "yes ma'am, we finally understand what you were saying". Then that turned into the Catalytic Converter tiles or something had failed and it was clogged. Just for the part is 2400 dollars. No warning lights, no check engine light nothing to say the car was having a severe issue. NOTHING.

The other problem is that this model for whatever reason consumes oil like I drink water. The first time it happened my car would stall and then all the sudden take off. Then it would idle like it was about to stop running. I actually went online and notice that others had complained about this problem so the next morning, I went to Autozone, checked the oil level and it was bone dry so I bought three quarts of oil (making sure not to over fill). Then I checked it again the next day. Every time I drive 300-400 miles or more I know to check the oil as soon as I get to my destination. Every time I have to add a minimum of a quart. I carry an extra quart in my vehicle just in case. AGAIN no warning lights came on, no check engine light came on, NOTHING.

I filed a case with Hyundai but we will see what their outcome will be. I asked them to pay for the parts at a minimum for getting my car repaired. They knew there was several engine issues and computer/electrical issues with this model and year. They have no fix for the oil consumption apparently. The vehicle is currently at a dealership to be repaired.

Update from Feb 22, 2023: Nov. 2022. Car lost power again. Certified mechanics could nit diagnose because there were no codes. Finally the diagnosed thst the coils went out. So three coild and spark plugs later it was running again but not really smoothly. Still drinks oil like i drink water. Plugs had almost s extreme black felt substance on them. Mechanic says proof of high oil consumption.

Feb 2023

Car lost power again on inclines. I Take it to a another hyundai dealership and once again catalytic convertor has failed again. Till using extreme amounts of oil. I am trying to trade car in but it is going to cost me money I don't really have. Hyundai has almost every recall imaginable on this model but still refuses to accept responsibility for faulty manufacturing. They refuse to reimburse me for repairs. The sagga continues. I cannot afford to trade car in but i cannot afford to keep repairing it either. I WILL NEVER BUY A HYUNDAI AGAIN. WORST CAR I HAVE EVER BOUGHT.
