Veloster Turbo 1.6L

  • Manual transmission
  • 107,000 miles

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo - catastrophic engine failure. Well taken care of and Hyundai had a track record of all maintenance on the car.

At a red light, I started to drive up the next road and not even 50 feet from the light there was a small explosion of sorts from the engine. Engine light came on, I engaged my clutch, all gauges have indicated the car died, smoke started coming from the front, metal chunks were bouncing and hitting things underneath the car, oil spewed on the roadway, car dead.

I got it rolled off the side and opened the car hood. Smoking was minimal and I turned everything off before this to make sure nothing would stay on fire. Smoke died down and noticed that my engine block now had a hole in it. I had walked back down the street where the problem occurred and picked up siding from my engine block, piston that was busted in half, and the connector rod that the piston fits onto the engine rod with. My piston basically broke in half and then sent whatever remained thru the side of my engine block. Tried to get warranty to cover it and they wouldn't. Hyundai will not recognize this issue as a problem.

I've seen stories of other Veloster Turbos having this very same issue. It cost me $5400 to get a refurbished engine installed. I am holding on to hope that this issue becomes a recall issue so I can get my money back. The service team who fixed my car tried to hold off repairs until Hyundai green lit the funds but after 2 months of dealing with them they just wouldn't say yes.

This is a huge safety concern and they should fix this. Luckily for me, traffic wasn't horrible. The driver behind me helped me pick up fragments of what was left after my engine blowing up. The only reason warranty refused was due to mileage. Had I been driving my car like a bat out of hell maybe it would have blown earlier.

This was my first brand new car. I took care of it better than anything else. Previous car was a Mini Cooper and I had well over 220,000 miles on it before I sold it to a high school kid needing a car. And I still see it on the road today.

Veloster Turbo 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,500 miles

Was accelerating when the vehicle felt as if it misfired, black smoke shot from the exhaust and speed immediately diminished. Took the vehicle into dealership and learned there was a "catastrophic engine failure". Read that many many 2013 turbos are suffering the same failure. Dealer replaced the short block with re manufactured part. Engine still does not run property- hesitates and hiccups. Does not accelerate, has lag. Dealer states they can NOT find any issues. Will be contacting lawyer regarding suit against Hyundai for lemon law.

Veloster Turbo 1.6L Twin Scroll Tu

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,000 miles

While driving on the interstate at 65 MPH, the vehicle shuddered and created a loud noise in the engine compartment. Smoke began to pour from the engine compartment while coming to a stop. The engine was immediately shut off and I called roadside assistance. After the evaluation at the dealership, they informed me that a small piece broke off inside the motor and became a projectile; was ejected through the bottom of the engine block. this caused a vacuum and the turbo was completely destroyed (exploded). The dealer ordered a new engine and air intake system under warranty. I was given a loaner vehicle and they replaced all parts within a weeks time. This happened at 22,000 miles and I am concerned that it could happen again. If this has happened to you please reply.
