It won't engage in any gear. No reverse, no forward, not even low or drive. But the console lights indicate it is in any specific gear correctly. i can feel it shifting the linkage, so it's all good - maybe a fuse? Strangely, the last time I "went somewhere parked for an hour then came home" on my way out, about a mile down the road. The car made a chattering sound so I pulled over and parked and discovered it was overheated. The mechanic had replaced the heater hose incorrectly and it had been rubbing the belt and made it leak. I cut and re-sectioned the hose with a $5 repair kit and drove it through traffic all evening, parked for an hour and drove home 7 miles through traffic. I then parked and 4 or 6 hours later when I got in to drive my friend home, it would not engage in any gear - no reverse, no forward, not even low or drive or any gear.
I love this car. I saw it and it was scraped all down the drivers side. I fell in love with it. I saw it every week for a few years. Then one day it was for sale, so I paid too much for it... the ball joint went out. I put the same one on. Then it went out again, and I had the mechanic change it. It went out again and i discovered their mechanic had the wrong ball joint. I had them put on a special ball joint, I thought that was correct and it worked okay for a year. Then the coils started burning out so I changed them until I got sick of it and I started paying mechanics to change them and they found a short, and then it was fine. Then the front hub bearings went out and I changed them, then the front pads, then the rear pads. It had it 4 wheel aligned. And now this.. so it's a normal Jag?.. anyone have a Jag that has no problems?
Update from Jan 3, 2020: p.s. I tried pushing the car backward with the engine running and the shift selector in reverse into the street to see if it would engage, but pulled the car a few days later but nothing made even a sound other than the engine rpms increasing normally... then on last night, which is almost a week later, I pulled it in at 20mph and tried to make it engage and nothing but rpms detecting the speedometer. I even tried to reverse at walking speed forward... which theoretically could have destroyed it if it engaged, but it didn't.
