Cherokee LX 4.2L 6 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

Will not start. Turn key and all your instruments light up, but nothing from the engine. Drop transmission into N and it starts like a it should. A GM dealer mechanic looked at it and said the neutral safety switch needed replacing. Cost = $700+ labor. Its not in an easy access area. A friend of mine offered to cut out the switch & bypass it. I dealt with the issue by shifting in to N 1 out of 3 times for 6 months. Finally traded it in. If you bypass the switch you could start the car while it was in D or R causing the car to lurch forward.

Saw a stranded woman with a '99. Hers wouldn't start. I told her to put in into N & it worked.

I think that ALL cherokees should be recalled to see WHAT the problem is caused from and should be ready for the consumers referral. Trying to start the vehicle and having to put it in neutral or back into park, then trying again and not having THAT work. I'm ready to get another vehicle.
