  • 180,000 miles
The contact owns a 1995 Jeep Cherokee. Upon purchasing the vehicle on March 3, 2009, the vehicle stalled and landed in a ditch at less than 40 mph. The contact noticed oil under the hood of the vehicle. An independent mechanic stated that the motor was blown, which caused the head gasket to fail. The dealer would not assist with the repairs. The failure and current mileages were 180,000.

While driving, consumer heard a loud noise. Noticed that engine mounts had broken. Dealer was notified. All three motor mounts on the right side of the vehicle were loose. They had sheared. The mechanical fan blade had moved forward and tore the shroud in half and was at the radiator surface. When pressing the accelerator the motor rose 10 - 12 inches. Consumer has the bolts and would like for them to be tested for metal fatigue.

I have now had to replace the motor mounts on my 1995 Jeep Cherokee 3 times in 4 years. Each time I was driving less than 40 mph and on paved roads in good condition. Fortunately, no injuries have occurred at this point, but the possiblilty is there. I have contacted the NHTSA site which contains many other reports (<100) of this exact same problem occurring to other people, in many cases happening multiple times like my case. There is obviously a design flaw that is casuing this problem.

While driving at 25 mph, consumer hit a small bump (culvert under road) and it sounded like a large pot hole had been hit. Looking in the rear view mirror, the driver saw (and later retrieved) a bolt bouncing down the road. Engine sounded deeper initially, and then a louder knocking sound started. The driver stopped and noticed that the fan was hitting the shroud and called a wrecker. The bolts to the motor mount had broken and the engine had dropped several inches. The problem was fixed.16 days later the top weld on the driver's-side door hinge broke away, leaving only the bottom hinge holding the door in place.

While driving down the road heard a loud bang, followed by loud rubbing sound from the fan.hard flutter in acceleration.the motor mount on the left side of the engine had separated from the engine. Upon a visual it is evident that the top two bolts had broken off previously due to dirt build up and rust.the bottom bolt had broken from the stress of the two previously broken bolts which caused the motor to tilt.all three bolts had broken off inside the motor.

While driving my Jeep Cherokee last Friday, April 6, 2000, I heard a sudden and drastic change in engine noise. The three bolts securing the front passenger side engine mount to the engine block had sheared off in the engine block. The engine had shifted so far in the engine compartment that the fan blades had struck the fan housing and seized up, breaking one of the blades off. Since Friday, I have done some research on the problem on the internet, and found many people who have experienced the same problem with their Cherokee - the passenger side engine mount bolts shearing off under normal use. What is being done about this issue" I have been in contact with other Jeep owners who have used this form to submit a complaint. Is Jeep going to be held responsible for this obvious defect" thank you, [xxx]. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
