About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Jeep death wobble. Violent shaking of a car when driving on highways and I have to slow down to below the speed limit to stop it. Multiple time occurrence. Has been "fixed" but has never been fixed.

While driving at aprox. 40-45 mph, the Jeep would start to shudder. Eventually it would shut off. The Jeep would then crank but not start. I had this problem happen for about four times. Three of the times the Jeep was towed to a repair shop. Twice the PCM unit was replaced and twice the crank position sensor was also replaced. The last repair was 1 month and a half ago. Two days ago, the Jeep stalled again down the road. I was traveling with my wife and children. We almost lost our lives. A 16 wheeler almost collided with us due that I could barely manipulate the Jeep because it turned off on me. I tried to do some visual inspections under the hood. I had one of my sons to wiggle the PCM (computer) while I cranked the starting switch. At one point the Jeep managed to start again. Then it stalled the moment my son stopped wiggling the PCM. I had another tow truck pick up the Jeep and send it back to the mechanic. Chrysler has not corrected this issue on the PCM and perhaps might not do it until one day someone gets seriously hurt. Videos on youtube show other Jeep Cherokee owners having the same problem 1996-2001.

I was driving down the highway, and all of a sudden I heard a loud noise. So I pulled over to the nearest gas station and realized I was leaking oil profusely. Then I realized the driver side motor mount had broken off of the engine causing a large hole in the engine block. I have taken great care of my vehicle, changed the oil every 3,000 miles, and then this happens at random. I didn't hit anything to cause the motor mount to break, so why would it break for no reason? anyways, the leaking oil caused a fire beneath my vehicle, and inside the engine compartment. But I quickly put out the fire by a container of water I had in my vehicle. I had my 13 year old brother with me and thank god he or myself was not injured. But it caused us great fear and stress.

I would like to know if the problem can be fixed, and see if there was a recall on this vehicle. What I really want to know is can we get some information on what to do about these few problems. This vehicle was a mother's day gift. No safety defect mentioned in summary.

November 13,1998 NHTSA, I orignally thought that the right side motor mount had failed. I brought the vehicle to my mechanic for repair. My mechanic informed me that the motor mount looked good(actually brand new), though the bolts for the right side mount bracket had snapped off in the block. The right side motor mount bracket bolts snapped off in the engine block? I worked for 5 years at various Dodge dealerships and I have been driving and working on vehicles for 23+ years and I have never heard of the bolts for the motor mount bracket snapping off in the block. I called Chrysler (guy molina) and informed them of the problem, file # 5272069. I asked if there was a recall for this problem, Chrysler said no. Although vehicle is out of warranty, they would assist in the cost of the repairs as long as regular maintenance on that part had been done. I called the Jeep dealers(6) in the plainfield NJ phone directory. I asked the service departments if they had come across this type of problem. Five of the six said they were familiar with this type of problem. I asked the service personnel at the dealership, if I had brought the vehicle in for service would they have checked these bolts, the answer was no, it is not a maintenence check list item. I should not have to pay for these repairs as the bolts mentioned should not fail. These bolts are installed with lock tight, the are not meant to fail or be removed and should last for the life of the vehicle. My last Chrysler product was a 1988 Dodge Dakota, I could have made commercials with where I took that vehicle and never broke a motor mount or any other part on that truck. When I sold that truck it had 112,000+ miles and it was still going strong. The Jeep is driven by my wife, back and forth to work, we also use the Jeep to tow a pop-up trailer. It has only been in four wheel(high) in snow or heavy rains. I cannot remember if we ever had it in four wheel(low). This vehicle has not been mechanica
