During our most recent Northern Wisconsin cold snap (-18 and lower) my husband went out to brush off & start our 2018 Jeep Cherokee. When he pressed the brake & pushed the start button (standard starting procedure) the car immediately revved to the RED LINE area on the tac & didn't rev down. He shut the engine off right away. He checked to make sure the floor mat (factory standard) wasn't jammed on the accelerator and that there wasn't anything jamming it. He then tried again, making sure his boots weren't touching the accelerator. Same thing. Immediate high rev to RED LINE. (by this time our daughter was starting her car for work, so she heard the crazy high rev, too) He shut it off & called me at work (Fortunately, it wasn't my turn to drive in my carpool that day) I called the dealership where we bought the vehicle (Ashland Ford, Dodge, Jeep, etc in Ashland, WI)
I asked the service manager to call my husband since HE was there when it happened. The service manager advised my husband to check the floor mat (done), make sure there wasn't anything blocking the accelerator (done) and maybe give it a few minutes - to which my husband told him he wasn't going to let an engine RED LINE in such frigid weather.
We were advised to call Chrysler roadside assistance & get it towed to the dealership. Which I did - being assured that all costs would be covered by the existing warranty. When the tow company came to pick it up, my husband tried one more time to start it with the tow driver right there. Same thing. Immediate high rev right to RED LINE. They shut the Jeep off, loaded it up & it was delivered to the dealership. I called the next day to check on the status.
The working service manager said that they had it in the (warm) shop overnight & tried starting it that morning with no apparent problem! I told them that I would like a complete diagnostic engine check performed on the Jeep to assure me that nothing is damaged after attempting to start the engine 3 times with the same instant high rev in such cold weather. They said they would 'check it all out' and get back to me on Monday. Anyone else have this problem? Stay tuned!
