- my ptu unit is bad & are on backorder class action law suit (2 reports)
I bought a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Limited in June of 2021 from Husker Auto in Lincoln Nebraska. I have had no problems with my Jeep until now. My PTU unit is BAD and disabled my Jeep and I now only have Front wheel drive. This is a KNOWN ISSUE recall for Jeeps 2017-2019 and My Jeep is having the same issue but not in the recall. I called Jeep recall department to verify, and they told me to Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and file a complaint, so I did.
Waiting to hear back. In the meantime, I just figured I would have to pay for it so I ordered it thru the dealership and the PTU ($1500) until is on back order with NO ETA, I learned that there is a class action law suit pending on this same issue., I cannot drive my Jeep due to the safety issue and I can't even get a PTU unit to fix my Jeeps problem. I feel that this is a BIG issue with Jeep not having the safety part my Jeep needs to be safe and drivable. Again, My Jeep is a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Limited with ONLY $47,000 Miles on it.! HELP !

On 8/18/25, my Jeep Cherokee Latitude service 4WD light came on. I took it to the dealership and was told that the PTU was bad and needs to be replaced. they also told me that another 2020 Jeep cherokee was brought in the same week with the same problem. The part is not available for 30-45 days. That tells me that there is a significant issue with the PTU's on the jeep cherokees and the manufacturer cannot keep up with the demand. She said there are no non OEM parts available, and that we would have to wait for the part. She also indicated that Jeep would not provide a loaner vehicle while we waited for a faulty part that they cannot keep in supply.
The fact that this was the second failed PTU car brought into the dealership in a week leads me to believe that the problem is far more severe than what Jeep is saying. I heard there was a recall on models up to 2019, but not 2020. I asked how they are producing new vehicles if the parts were 1.5 months out and she said they have different PTU's (hopefully more reliable ones). My 2007 Jeep cherokee is still running and other than a new alternator, no problems. Not sure if this vehicle was produced by our neighbors south of the Rio Grande, but whatever they are doing, the reliability of the Jeep brand has suffered. I have 2 jeep cherokees, a chrysler 300, and a Ford Expedition and Mercury Mariner. The newer jeeps and the chrysler have been money pits. Going back to Chevy and Ford for all my transportation needs.
