Our 2008 Jeep Compass is too unsafe to drive. The mechanic I took it to made me sign a paper so he wouldn't be held responsible if I drove it home. The subframe is completely corroded. All of the bolts connecting it to the frame are also rusted, and the bolt on the control arm connection is rusted thru on the top of the subframe, with plate metal that has rusted completely thru leaving a 6 in piece of metal just hanging down. That seems to be the only corroded part from what I could see, but the mechanic said there may be more when it's taken off. I cannot afford to have a mechanic do this work! He quoted me a price of at least $1200.00 even though I could buy the part online for less than $150.00. I'm only a weekend mechanic at best!
Other than that, the Compass is in pretty good condition and I'd like to keep it going as there are only 151,000 miles on it. But it is sitting in my driveway, un-useable as it is!

After a little research, I have found there are thousands of people with the exact same problem. When my certified mechanic located this problem, he refused to allow me to drive it any further. I am upset as this is my wife's car and this could have injured or killed her if the entire engine fell out of the vehicle. Chrysler/Jeep has known about this for years and failed to do anything about this well known problem - a major safety issue. If someone is injured or killed the manufacturer will have serious legal issues. If I don't get any relief, I intend to seek legal counsel.
