About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Car randomly shuts off while driving. Started with no known cause then it started doing this after fueling the car. Have seen that it is a well known problem with Jeep Compass, and other models like the Compass.

The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Compass. After fueling the vehicle, it sputtered and stalled. The vehicle was able to restart and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the intake manifold sensor actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 102,000.

Filled my gas tank at the gas station before getting onto the highway. Car stalled and turned off merging onto the highway about a mile down the road. Lost control of breaks and steering. No warning lit up on dash. Googled and found out many others have this issue. This is dangerous and I was almost killed, something needs to be done.

First of all, this is one of the most common complaints of the entire Jeep Compass line and it still has not been recalled. My Jeep Compass 2010 stalls randomly when I drive and is a major hazard. 2 mechanics including a local dealer are unable to diagnose the problem (which is a common theme in all of complaints regarding the Jeep Compass). It has almost caused an accident several times with me (another common theme) and it may eventually take a death for it to be on the radar for an actual recall. It has happened in the driveway driving 5mph or on the highway driving 70mph. It is extremely frightening. There is no warning sign. The car drives incredibly well when it is not stalling. Shame on the NHTSA for not recalling this yet. I will never purchase a Jeep again since there is no support from their end or even from the national service here. I got scared the last time it stalled and jammed my finger on the steering wheel to steer it to the shoulder on a highway driving 70mph! the car had about 84K miles on it, but the stalling happens on even the newer models with less than 2,000 miles driven!!
