While driving at 30mph the Jeep cut off, sounded like it was out of gas the tank was over half full. After trying to crank it I noticed smoke coming from under the hood at the windshield area. I opened the hood and flames shot out. I closed the hood and 2 cars behind me was a police, he care the fire department and they were there within 5 min. By then the flames were inside the Jeep and the motor looked like melted plastic to me. I still dont know why it caught fire I had no electrical work done on it. I was stalling while driving but when I had it check for tune-up I was told it had new plugs and did'nt need a tune-up. I don't know why my Jeep caught fire and the insurance rep. Said it was burned to badly to find out.

At first vehicle would not start, no prior warning. Towed to dealer who found wiring harness had started to melt. Consumer spoke with a mechanic that states the wiring harness has been rerouted, the harness in consumer's vehicle runs along the lower radiator support, now the main wiring harness runs inside the engine compartment.

All of the problems identified in my complaints are covered by Chrysler extended warranty. But I strongly feel Jeep is building an inferior and unsafe product which can cause serious accidents. The most notables were the (2) auto transmissions failure at freeway speed. The transmissions had to be replaced and the replacement unit was installed with a defective pump which also went out. The most recent incident is with the engine and all electrical system shuts off at freeway speed with no warning. The explaination given was a weak battery and loose battery cable. All other incidents are due to sub-standard Jeep oem parts. I wish my complaint will force Jeep to investigate why a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 limited, their flagship, would failed time after time at such a young mileage. Thank you.

Front differential initially rebuilt by dealer, at same time rear differential was replaced.. subsequently front differential failed and was replaced in total, including axle housing. While traveling 200 miles from home at 65 mph in passing zone car "died" losing all power. Able to make breakdown lane through traffic, waited 1.5 hrs. For chrylser provided tow to nearest dealer. Closed at 8:45 P.M. on Friday. Tow truck took us to hotel and returned our disabled car to dealership. They were only open for sales on Saturday, so we needed to rent a car to get to relatives house for sat. Night till someone from home could come up and tow our disabled car back to NY on Sunday, where it was left at local dealer. Dealer said coil wire was routed to close to exhaust manifold causing it to overheat and short to manifold, causing loss of power.

The vehicle was purchased on 3/6/98. I began experiencing electrical failure on 3/14/98. The vehicle was returned for non-operative horn and electrical shock on 3/20/98 to benke Chrysler-Plymouth Jeep Eagle. The technician worked on the vehicle for 1 1/2 hours but was unable to find the problem. I was advised to bring the vehicle back or take it to another service center closer to me. I took the vehicle to nolf Chrysler Dodge Inc. On 3/30/98. The technician advised both horns to be faulty with internal shorts. The horns were ordered and replaced a week later. I continued to have severe shocks which I was advised by Jeep dealers were static discharge. On December 15th I was awoke by the constant sound of the horn blowing on my vehicle. The police arrived a short time later. I disconnected the battery to stop the horn from blowing and then contacted benke Chrysler-Plymouth Jeep. I was advised to disconnect the horn relay. The vehicle was then driven to gibsonia (without a horn, once again). The technician worked on the vehicle for 2 hours and I was advised the horn relay was defective. I was awaken again at 11pm by the sound of horn going off at my home and once again the police arrived. There seems to be no known cause to date for this defect. The horn blows for no apparent reason while setting idle and does not shut off till horn relay is pulled or battery is disconnected.
