Vehicle cannot read the gas level correctly and there is a cross flow problem with the vehicle. Contacted dealer.. consumer stated the fuel tank mounted fuel level sending unit accuracy degraded over time, indicating that there is more fuel in reserve than there actually is.

I purchased this vehicle with a 3 month/3000 mile warranty and since the purchase I am having problems with the gas gauge. For some reason the gauge will instantly drop to empty and then back to the correct level. I've had it to the dealership where I bought it 3 times and they can't find a problem because the gauge is reading normally. Now that the vehicle is out of warranty I am stuck with the burden of a faulty fuel gauge and am wondering how to resolve this problem seeing that the dealership couldn't repair the problem. I also am concerned because I think this problem should of been resolved while it was under warranty. I, M sure as soon as I open my wallet at the dealership the problem will be resolved. I also know that previous year Jeep had this problem.

The fuel level gauge doesn't work correctly. I do not like to be stranded on the highway with my twin 2 year olds when the tank becomes suddenly empty. The 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a recall for the same problem and I would like to know if the same part was installed in my vehicle and why it isn't included in the same recall?.

Fuel gauge does not read correct level of fuel actually present in vehicle. Consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer, refused to provide any assistance.

Gas guage indicates more fuel than in tank. When tank shows a 1/4 tank it actually is on empty. Dealer is finding problem to correct. Consumer will add more information. Fuel level sending unit failed causing vehicle to run out of gas and consumer to be stranded on the side of the road.

While traveling at approximately 65 mph vehicle stalled without warning. Digital calibration that showed amount of fuel in vehicle was off. Gas guage dash (non-digital) showed that there was fuel in vehicle when engine stalled due to no gas in vehicle.

Dealer sold vehicle with leaking rear seals, defective differential. Noticed bumping and whining noise less than 8 hours after purchase. Sun roof leaked causing the headliner to detach from roof of vehicle. Repaired once-said drain tubes were routed properly. Second time replaced roof-said seals did not match. Rear differential replaced. But did not address leakage around transfer case, seals etc in Dec 98. Now it's in the shop again! gas gauge fluctuates to empty when idling. Transmission slips. Driver seat automatiically reclines and heater does not work consistently.

I was driving North on rt. 684 with my gas gauge reading was 1/4 full. Vehicle stalled in the third lane of the highway. I managed to pull over and avoid oncoming traffic. One hour later, a state trooper picked me up and drove me to a service station. He told me that my vehicle may have a faulty gas guage as he has picked up other drivers of Jeep Grand Cherokee that have had the same thing happen to them. He said he thought that certain years of the vehicle had been recalled. He turned out to be right. Once the vehicle was refueled, I had no problems starting up and driving home. The next week I took the Jeep into pamby motors in ridgefield ct and they replaced under warranty the defective part. I was fortunate that the incident occurred when I was alone and not with my family or at a time when the traffic volume would have made it more difficult to avoid traffic. I would like to hear back from Chrysler and the NHTSA about this problem, whether it is widespread and what Chrysler intends to do about it.

Before I realized that the guage wasn't working, I ran out of gasoline twice. The second time while I was on the highway during the rush hour commute. This was extremely scary and dangerous as I was stuck at a dead stop in the fast lane with no where to go. I was hit during the second incident. I did not wear out the gas tank. Although the manager at the dealership told me that she had heard lots of complaints about this same problem from other customers, Chrysler will not pay for the repair in full.
