I purchased a new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee in May 1999. After 11,000 miles this vehicle began shuddering when braking at speeds above 35 mph. I took the car back to the dealer and the front rotors and pads were replaced under the warranty. At 27,000 miles (Nov. 2002) the problem returned. This time the warranty has expired. The dealer said they would provide the parts at no charge but I would have to pay for the labor to replace the rotors. The dealer assured me that this would be the long term solution to the brake/shudder problem. Yesterday, seven months and 5,000 miles later it took the car back in for the same braking problem. This time, I have to pay for the labor to have the calipers replaced and warped rotors. I am finding that this brake problem with Jeep Grand Cherokee is not isolated to my car. The dealer acknowledges that there are "problems" with the brakes for this year and model. Chrysler/Jeep should be forced to recall the 1999 Grand Cherokee and permanently fix this flawed braking system.

Brakes still squeak after being replaced several times. Air conditioner worked intermittently. There was also a foul odor coming out of it. Had to fill with freon once a month. No air conditioner now.

In April of 2002 I purchased a used 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a local dealer because it had only 14000 miles on it. I have had to replace the brake rotors and pads due to vibration 2 times. At 46000 miles I put new tires on this to quiet a noise problem. Now at 65000 miles the noise is extreme coming from drive train. I was told today there is a defect in the ring/pinion gear assemblies used on the 99/00 model year Jeep. But there has yet to be a recall regarding this condition. I am very disappointed in the durability of the product, as it should have lasted far longer than 65000 miles, especially for the amount paid for it! hopefully Chrysler will take responsibility for poor engineering and design quality. But I doubt it. The roaring and howling noise is so loud that you can not hear others talking at road speed, and I am greatly concerned about the safety of the vehicle, but due to the great cost of it, I cannot trade it or afford to repair it because I am on disability!!!!!!!!!!

Between 45K-$65K miles have had continuous problems with the front brakes. Rotors have been replaced and re-machined twice, most recently advised to upgrade to aftermarket ceramic pads, 10K miles later exact problem has returned. Brakes pulse at all speeds once warm, both during driving and particularly when applied causing vehicle and steering wheel to shimmy. 80% of my driving is highway and this is completely unacceptable. Multiple dealers have acknowledged this as a very common problem on the 99-01 models but that Chrysler will not resolve the issue. Now I've been advised to replace with a newer caliper design that will cost an addtl. $450 bringing my total brake expenses on the front axle to well over $1000 in 1 year.

The vehicle experienced multiple problems. The horn failed. The interior lights failed. The door locks were inoperative. The ABS light and the brake light came on and remained on. The vehicle overheated when at idle for more than a few minutes. This problem has been addressed more than three times with no resolution. The brakes vibrated and this has been a problem since the first year of purchase. The consumer has requested Jeep to buy back the vehicle. Mr scc

The vehicle experienced the following problems: No horn, interior lights, or door locks, the ABS/brakes lights were on, continuous overheating when idled, despite repeated brake work, they were still a problem, the dashlights didn't get bright as normal, hissing noise in the brakes (booster was replaced), blower motor was inoperative along with mode position (replaced blower motor resister wiring harness), front pinion seal leaked and was replaced, there was a broken bolt in the rear stabilizer bar (removed), when the vehicle was placed in drive from park, it shifted hard (replaced driveshaft), the control module was replaced, the brakes pulsated on numerous occasions (tsb was completed), the blower module was replaced, all gauges stopped working, all warning light would come on, the engine temperature climbed higher than normal (replaced the fan power transmitter), the windshield wipers had become inoperative, and the arm had broken (replaced the rear arm). The consumer requested the dealer to back the vehicle. Mr scc

When braking hard the vehicle's front end vibrated severely. There is a tsb 05-003-02 for this issue.
- Conover, NC, USA
The dealer replaced the brakes and rotors yet the problem occurred again.
- Benwood, WV, USA
The brakes and rotors were serviced on 5 different occasions.. the weather strip was loose on the right rear door, also the vehicle pulled to the right.
- Granbury, TX, USA
A severe shaking of the vehicle when brakes are applied. This has been going on for about 5 months, and is getting worse. Was told by a dealer "dick hannah" in Washington, Chrysler would not pay for any problems though Chrysler has a substantial amount of complaints against them. I found a local company to fix the problem for about $200 less than the dealer. I am still very pissed-off about the customer service of Chrysler. With this many complaints why are they so unwilling to pay for, what sounds to me, like an engineering mistake in the design of the brakes. I will never buy a Chrysler product again.

The dealer recommended the front brake rotors, pads, and calipers on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee be replaced at a cost of $400. This is due to a service bulletin issued by Chrysler in early 2002. Although Chrysler recommends this kit for 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it will only cover the cost of this change for vehicles currently under warranty. The dealer told me the original caliper design was a two piston arrangement that applied uneven pressure to the rotor through the brake pads resulting in uneven wear on the rotors. The new caliper is a four piston design that applies pressure in a more evenly distributed fashion. An inadequate design of the front brake caliper that results in uneven wear is a safety issue the cost of which should be covered by Chrysler for all vehicles containing this problem. I was advised by chrylser that if a recall is issued in the future I would be reimbursed.

When the brake was applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance.
- Troy, MI, USA
The brake pedal is hard and when pressing the vehicle shimmies violently. Please provide any additional information.
- Boiling Springs, NC, USA
Consumer stated the brakes were wearing prematurely due to a bad brake pump.
- Valley Stream, NY, USA
While driving at 45-50 mph the vehicle started pulling to the right, steering wheel shimmied, and smoke came from under the hood. The dealership indicated that the brake calipers had locked up and caught on fire. Dealership replaced the calipers, rotor, pads etc, . problem recurred.
