Grand Cherokee

  • 125,000 miles
99 Jeep Grand Cherokee purchased 4/2003. Front brakes shudders at road/highway speeds of 40-65mph. Acquired this/tsb from sd school district automotive shop. This/tsb requires replacement of akebono front calipers from teves. After replacement the problem didn't cease. Did some analyzing myself, found that rear brake pads were cracked. Replaced the whole rear brake components and the problem ceased until after rear brake pads passed 60% of thickness, problem arises again. My own conclusion lies to design of rear brake pad material to be insufficient for the weight of vehicle.

I own a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. Multiple times the left front brake caliper freezes (seizes) onto the rotor causing the vehicle to violently shake and pull to the left, warping the rotor and damaging the brake pads. I have replaced the rotors and brake pads but after a short period of time it happens again. It seems to be triggered by using the brakes frequently, for example when braking going down hills. While I have not had a fire the brakes were glowing red on one occasion. I believe this to be an extremely dangerous defect that must be corrected as my research indicates that many, if not all owners of this year (as well as other years) make and model experience this problem.

My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited w/42,000 miles. Yes. Not a typo. 42,000, orignal owner & "scared to death" to drive this SUV. I have alot of the already problems, that have been reported. Had to pay many, w/my own cash. This SUV schould have came in 1 color "lemon yellow". it is an accident watng to happen. The recent problem is now I have no A/C-heat or defroster. Ths is due, to failure of the automatic temp control to work. I T started 1st by intermittently working, till now not working at all, this is just 1 more, to the list, of many other problems. I don't think that it is an coincidence that all my issue have happenned, almost exactly, in the order, of all the other complaints. I can't undestand how a company can get away w/this. This new problem can cost up to $2000, if it is, like previous reported problems, happens to be the "blend doors". as a handicapped driver I drive less than 4,000 miles a year. This is the only auto I drive, thus the many, many probs have yet to raise thier head. I have read almost all complaints(too many to read) this SUV schould be a "total recall, I have never heard more complaints & problems, in my life, for any automobile. This SUV schould be studied & reseached, on "how not to build an automobile. Just read the many complaints here & on the internet. We are not making this stuff up. I don't know how they stayed in business as long as they did. We, the taxpayers, bailed them out. Who is bailing out all the owners, of this "death-trap"" if that is not absurd enuff, many problems could have been repaired, by Jeep & still can. What is the purpose, of nhsta, if not to intervene? you have all the complaints. Hundreds of them. You have them posted, yet, we taxpayers/owners safety, has been at risk ever since this SUV was driven out of the showroom. How did you not make a recall on the rotor/brakes issue which was reported at 3,000 miles? I am so frustrated. Is braking problems not a safety issue" please, help us!

I own a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd, also referred to as wj. In the 2 years I have own this Jeep certain problems came up. Apart from the issue with the front brakes warping the rotors, and needing upgraded calipers and new rotors replaced. Which the DC dealers didn't want to acknowledgments other issue and equally troublesome and probably dangerous is the current issue of the HVAC system no working properly. This problem is very common amongst these vehicles. I have a little heat blowing on the driver side compartment, but 0 heat and all cold on the passenger and defrost. God help me if im stuck on the side of the road during the winter, which it is right now. My passengers and I would not fair well. The cold blowing from the pass. Side vents and defrost is like the A/C was on. Now, this issue is the blend doors are broken, Chrysler and Jeep both now of this issue. And the cost of the repairs of course are very high from the dealership, as it involves removing the dashboard the center console and the steering column. This has to be a recall and fix their expense at least.

Vehicle was purchesed used, and within 10,000 miles the front brakes started to vibrate and the pedal pulsed when applied. Dealership said daimler Chrysler knew of the problem but no recall. Replaced brakes at cost of $570. Less than 17K miles later the brakes are worse than they were prior to having them fixed. What does it take, and when does a recall get initiated?

I have had at least 6 full sets of rotors and pads. If I remember correctly, 2 sets have been turned and rotors replaced. On time Jeep actually told me my dealer didn't have the right tool so they had me bring it to another dealer!! I have complained and they deny any responsibility. They paid for most of the jobs up to 70K but I have paid for the last several. I moved and can't find my records, and Jeep won't release my repair history to me, they say it is proprietary. I maintain that since they never engineered and manufactured the parts correctly, they are still responsible. They are incredible about this considering that 2 different Jeep dealer service managers told me they have many, many owners w/same problems. I can't believe this hasn't been covered by recall, considering jep has issued 4 tsb's pertaining to the brakes. My old dealer in NY told me they would send me my service history, I am waiting for that. Please help!!! there are 1000's of us check the NHTSA web site......

Service brake would not release. Brake caused violent vehicle vibration and feedback to steering wheel. Steering wheel vibrated so violently it was difficult to hold. Brakes would not release and allow wheels to spin freely. Mileage dropped off to 7 mpg from 16 mpg or so. Service brake fluid reservoir seemed to be filling back up? brake linings were wearing away and smoking. One rotor which was not scored prior to incident is now badly scored. The pads had plenty of a lining left before the incident and car is now unsafe, accept to drive to the shop to replace rotors and upgrade caliper. Park brake and down shifting have limited stopping capability.

Brakes. I own a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee that required a complete front brake job. This included "upgraded" calipers replacement of all front brake components and machining on all rear components. At less than 70,000 miles this seems a little extreme. I have checked with Jeep directly and they feel this is not a problem. I see on the complaint list there are quite a few cars that have this issue. What is being done and what can I do?

Brake rotors and pads replaced every 3,000-4,000 miles...the last time vehicle was taken for problem, the rotors, pads and calipers were replaced. This is my sixth replacement of the rotors and Chrysler has informed me that they will not be responsible for the defective parts continuing to fail. The dealer states that approximately 1,000 customers have had replacement rotors installed and more than 20% continue to return because of pulsation and brake problems. I believe that there should be a recall after countless thousands of customers like myself have had to endure not only unsafe driving as a result of this problem, but inconveniences, additional out of pocket costs, time wasted and the hassles of dealing with the manufacture. This problem will not go away unless NHTSA does something. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
