Brake rotors repeatedly warp causing severe shaking in steering during highway speed braking and moderate shaking at slower speeds braking. This is a persistant problem with this model Jeep - mine, as well as others according to reports I've read. Jeep repairs this defect under warranty by using an "on-the-car lathe". this is a temporary fix at best as these brake rotors are of defective manufacturing.. Chrysler/Jeep is stalling a recall by attempting these ineffective repairs in my opinion. I believe a safety recall is urgent.

I leased my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee in December of 1998. In August of 1999, the dealer had to machine the rotors at 11,200 miles (the pads were fine). In January 2000, the dealer replaced the front and rear rotors at 19,062 miles (again, the pads were fine). In June 2000, the dealer had to replace the front rotors at 27,324 miles (as usual, the pads were ok). Now that it is out-of-warranty, I had the Jeep checked by our mechanic. In April 2001, he had to replace the rear rotors at 38,500 miles. I did need pads this time. Based on the reports of faulty rotors on the 1996, 1997, and 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I believe that DaimlerChrysler should issue a recall on the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also want to be reimbused by them.

We have experienced a recurrent problem of a hard shimy/ shaking when applying the brakes suddently at speeds of 50mph and above. The dealer has repaired the problem 4 times since we purchased the Jeep in December 1998. We are currently in the process of trying to get the dealer to repair the problem for the 5th time. We are concerned about the safety of our Jeep, as well as all those other Jeep with the same brake problems, being on our nations highways. Jeep is not responsive to our concerns.

(reported on)

Grand Cherokee 4WD

  • miles
Rotors constantly warping, dangerous shake at highway speeds when applying brakes. Severe banging in rear when coming to a stop. Dealer fixed three times but keeps coming back. Vehicle stalls for no reason. Dealer cannot fix. There are many other problems and the dealer just ignores. This car has a mind of its own. This car has serious safety issues.this car is a lemon. This car is dangerous and I can't believe that Chrysler is able to get away with it hoping everybody and everything just goes away. The NHTSA is supposed to be for the people so I really hope you can do something against a company as big as chrylser. They should not be able to get away with sweeping their problems under the rug.
