Grand Cherokee

  • 125,000 miles
My driver's seat on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has broke. The metal track underneath has sheared off in several spots and the hinge to recline the seat also has began tearing. The broken metal makes it possible for the seat on my Jeep to slide from side to side and to also slide forward and back. The broken metal on the hinge also digs into my side and I have to cover it with a leather glove to keep it from drawing blood. More importantly though is the fact that the seat moves and is not safe when driving, even if just driving on a city street, because it is not secure and you never know when it is going to give out and shift, causing you to stop paying attention to the road so that you can try to fix the problems with you seat. I really think that this should be repaired as I have seen many people having similar problems. In fact, in order to keep the seat from sliding back into the rear seat, I have installed my own safety features - I have place a cooler in the rear seat and the head of a sledgehammer underneath the seat to support the seat and to keep it from sliding back any further. I find this to work well as far as keeping my seat from moving, however it should not come to this.

Grand Cherokee

  • 149,975 miles
I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with 150,000 miles on it. While driving home from work on July 21st the outboard forward support for the driver's seat gave way. I immediately pulled over and looked the seats underside thoroughly and noticed the forward element of the seat had indeed broken between the seat itself, and the track on which the seat rides. I jarred my back making a left turn when the element of the seat gave way, and it left me wondering how a vehicle could have a seat whose support structure design allows for failure of an element critical to the safety of the driver or passenger.

Grand Cherokee

The driver's seat of my vehicle has developed a squeak. When I took it to the dealer they were not sure if the bolts securing the seat have loosened or the welds have cracked. All I'm told is bring it in and they will tell me how much it will cost to repair it. Reading similar complaints, this seems to be common problem and should be subject to a safety recall.

Grand Cherokee 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles
The left side of the driver's seat became disengaged from the floor mount because a 2 1/2 " section of the metal seat frame including the mounting bolt fractured and broke away from the frame so that the 2 1/2" section and the bolt are still attached to the floor mount, but the seat is not. I requested that the manufacturer replace or repair as a safety issue, but both the dealer and the manufacturer said it was beyond the warranty period and they could not. They failure appears to be from metal fatigue. The seat has never been subjected to unusual stress or weight. I am the only driver and weigh ~180 lbs. The car has never been in an accident that would have put additional force against the seat. The seat just stuck one day so you could not move the seat forward or back, and the seat began to squeak which apparently was due to the frame containing the mounting bolt breaking.

The front drivers seat frame was broken. We were told that the seat should not have failed by the dealership. If we would have gotten into an accident the driver would have gone through the windshield because the the front seat frame was broken. This part was not even covered by the extended warranty we purchased from the dealership. We had a 100,000 mile -0- deductable warranty. We had to pay for the safety related parts that the dealership said should not have broken in the first place.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. After four years of use, the driver seat disconnected from the metal frame attached to the floor of the car. I looked under the car seat and the metal had twisted away from the bolt anchoring the driver seat to the floor. I only weigh 190 pounds and I don't believe that this should happen after four years of use. It is a dangerous condition as the driver seat is no longer anchored to the floor.
