Grand Cherokee 6-cyl

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2000. About the end of 2001 the drivers seat rail broke at the front bolt area causing the seat to be unstable and dangerous. I went to the dealer and, although out of warranty, they replaced it no charge. They were unsure why it happened. Now, the week of 11-15-03 the front seat rail broke again in the same place. I drive long distances and put a lot of miles on a vehicle. I went to the dealer and was told it would cost $378. Plus tax to have repaired. I also talked to a Chrysler rep about the problem but was told that their seats were made for average size people ( I am 275 lbs) and they would not guarantee the new unit would not also break. I asked what was suppose to be average size and got no answer but that her husband was my size and she considered 275 to be average but that is not what is considered average by her company. When the first unit broke I was only 240. I told her this seem to be a safety issue due to the unit breaking under normal driving conditions and I asked what would happen if I had a rear end collision, is the energy from the crash going to send me flying through the back window because the seat rail isn't strong enough to keep from breaking" her answer was that their seats were made to nation safety standards. I find this problem unnerving that the rail just breaks without any undue stress and I am being blamed for the problem for my size. I have never heard of such a thing and wonder what is the weight standards for people to have safety in an automotive seat" please help.

I purchased a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee larado new in September of 2000. In June of 2003 without prior warning the driver's seat broke. The seat frame broke away from the track ripping a piece of metal underneath. This did not occur during any forceful action and I feel it could be an extremely dangerous safety hazard. Chrysler will not take any responsibility for the cost of repairs. The part number that needs to be replaced is 4856471 per estimate I received from Chrysler.

My vehicle hydroplaned and during the accident, the driver's seat broke off of the tracks and I sustained a laceration to the bottom of my right foot. I contacted Chrysler about 2 weeks after the accident to report what happened. I was then contacted by an inspector from Chrysler and after that I only know that the file has been sent to a law firm in Washington D.C. apparently the company thought I was making a claim against them, which was never my intent. I would just like to know the results of the inspection. I saw a local lawyer yesterday 9/30/02 and he feels that I will never be able to obtain the inspection results because Chrysler would be doing an injustice to themselves. Could you please assist me with this matter or give me another contact who could do so. Thank you for your time, susan hoagland

This Jeep has numerous problems and has been to the dealership for service 4 time and they have failed to repair even 1 of our complaints. All complaints other than the pull to the right have been dismissed with the explanation of can not duplicate. They have tried to repair the pull to the right but it only got worse. We were told by a repair tech. That it needed a new part to correct the pulling to the right but Chrysler has failed to install this needed part. We have requested a repurchase of the Jeep under the lemon law but Chrysler denied our request stating that the pull to the right is due to "road crown" and if you hold the steering wheel with a strong to medium grip you don't notice the pull to the right! we have this in writing from the arbitrator that Chrysler hired. The dealership and Chrysler attempted to conceal some service repair forms that had the loose rear hatch problem and the pull to the right. Chrysler stated in letters to the attorney general that we had never brought the rear hatch alarm to the attention of the dealership which was disproved at arbitration but we still never received a copy of the repair sheet even though the dealership has it and provided a copy to the arbitrator. We have parked this Jeep due to the increasing severity of problems. We think this Jeep is dangerous due to it's numerous defects. We refuse to let anyone ride in the back for months due to the rear hatch (which the district manager for Chrysler found was loose at the arbitration hearing by pushing on the bumper and hatch.

While traveling into a curve at approximately 35 mph, the seat frame broke underneath and made it easy for the seat to suddenly rock freely with a left-leaning to front and right-leaning to back motion, making the vehicle almost impossible to drive now. Howard-wilson Chrysler-Plymouth-Jeep in jackson, ms (where I've been having most of the service work performed on the Jeep) was contacted about possible recall information, but I was advised that I'd be required to pay for the repair myself. I have not contacted the manufacturer or the dealership where the vehicle was originally purchased yet, but an estimate for the repair of this item was in excess of $400. I recently removed the seat from the vehicle at a local shop and tried to have the seat framed welded back together (because it's a clean separation of the metal on the front driver's side corner of the seat above where it attaches to the track), but the shop strongly advised against it for the likelihood of weaking the metal in that area and leaving the potential of it happening again, but even they had no idea how this particular breakage could have happened in the first place.
