Driving with my daughters to the beach when suddenly my steering wheel froze as I was along a winding road. Towed truck to a mechanic who diagnosed that the gear box was broken at that point he repaired the gear box. Approximately 1 week later the same exact thing except that the truck caught fire, again towed the truck back to mechanic who replaced the gear box. I thought I was going to die when I experienced my steering wheel freeze and the fire was extinguished quickly so minimal damage was suffered. In 1 year that I own this vehicle the radiator has also needed to be repaired, the locks on my driver door stopped working, the fan in the cooling system has stopped working, I have been told that the muffler was improperly installed. I never expected so many faults or so much money spent in repairs on a so called certified used vehicle.

: the contact stated the vehicle gear shifter changed the gears from drive to neutral or the vehicle would stall while turning. The problem occurred while slowing down for a stop, pulling out or turning while driving between 20 to 30mph. There is a NHTSA recall, # 99V312000, regarding the gear box. The vehicle had the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.

Hello, I am the owner of a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the VIN#: [xxx]. I am experiencing the following issues with my vehicle: The steering feels loose, feels like it is sticking and it seized once. I had the vehicle inspected by a dealership and was told that the steering gear box is defective and needs to be replaced. Since I am very concerned about the safety of my family, we have discontinued driving the vehicle for now. After some research for the possible root cause of this problem I found the following recall notice: 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo NHTSA recall id number: 99V312000 recall date: Nov 04, 1999 component: Steering:gear box (other than rack and pinion) potential units affected: 1259 please review interestingly enough, my own vehicle was also built in August of 1999 (per sticker on vehicle). After talking to the dealership to see if my vehicle was included in the recall, I was only told that there are no open issues listed on my vehicle and they could not even tell me if my steering gear was replaced at the time of the previous owner. After calling Chrysler corporate customer service, I was also told that there is no open recall on my vehicle and that there is nothing they could do for me. Here is my request to you: Please contact daimler Chrysler to get some more information as to why my vehicle is not included in this recall even though it was built in exactly the same time frame as all the recalled vehicles. I would expect for DC to include my vehicle in this recall and remedy the defect in their component before anybody gets hurt. Thank you very much for your help. Best regards, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Summary: Vehicle description: Sport utility vehicles. Some steering gear units were assembled with internal end-of-travel-stops that missed the heat treat process, resulting in soft internal travel stops. Consequence: This could result in sticking, binding, or seizing of the steering gear there is already a recall on the 200O Jeep Grand Cherokee for the steering box. I am having this problem as well. As a result I drove off the road last night going around a corner. I live in the mountains of Colorado so I was lucky this was not in a bad spot. I was able to go onto the shoulder and stop. It did free itself after I revved the engine and turned the wheel. But none the less this could result in a crash. I have contacted Jeep and they tell me I am not covered by their recall. I find this ludicrous. If they know of a issue they should take responsibility for it. Especially one that could result in some either running head on into another vehicle, or driving off the road.

Steering makes a sqeaking noise when right hand turns are made. Dealer has replaced gear box twice. The problem still exists. The dealer is starting to ignore me and refusing to aknowledge the problem now that the car is out of warranty.a formal complaint will be filed with daimler=Chrysler.

Whining noise upon turning the vehicle left or right at low speeds.. dealer in princeton, NJ says "sir...thats normal operating noise".. wow, just like pleading the 5th.. no comment.. took it to another dealer(one where it was purchased from) they recognized the problem and said it was a common problem.. they replaced the gear box. Sound is coming from the pressurized fluid within the steering gear box. It is a confirmed design flaw. Congratulations Chrysler.. you did it again..the new gear box is much quieter but aftera month..the noise is back but not as pronounced. Lesson for today.. not all dealers are the same in their service ability.

Steering wheel/column is making a clicking noise when wheel is turned, and steering wheel feels as if it is loose. Also, when wheel is turned a beeping noise is emitted on a random occurrence. Dealership has examined vehicle, and changed gear box three (3) times. However, problem has not been corrected. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

Experiencing what the dealership calls a honking noise in the steering wheel sometimes when making right turns. The dealership has tried to fix the problem twice now by putting two steering gear assemblies in and the problem still exists. Now they think the tubing for the steering wheel fluid is the problem and that it needs to be re-designed. They think the tube is to small. Could this problem possibly cause me any safety problems while driving" what should I do considering they are telling me that they have to re-design this tubing"

The DaimlerChrysler district manager for Maryland and D.C. first told me that the "crown" of the roadway was the cause of my problems with this 2000 Jeep grand lemon - when pressed to present a more creditable explanation for the extreme steering pull to the right side of the roadway, his answer was: "Mr. Jackson, I'm telling you as the Washington zone manager for daimler Chrysler that I cannot find any problems with this Jeep and as the zone manager for Maryland I say you do not have a problem, therefore DaimlerChrysler does not consider this Jeep to be defective. As the daimler Chrysler zone manager I am telling you that in my opinion there are no problems with this vehicle". --- what a load of '!@#$% !!!!!!!! --- (a complimentary load of '!@#$% seems to be standard equipment on all Jeep Grand Cherokee and this is one feature I could do without) --- the daimerchrysler people have proven to me that they are arrogant, flat out liars. They just laughed at me when I said I would be reporting these problems to NHTSA. They just don't care. -- in two or three years, when daimler-Benz finally dumps the Chrysler division into that deep cesspool of defective products and obscene customer service, I will be happy to attend the corporate liquidation sale in auburn hills - driving my new Honda.

On my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, steering has to constantly be corrected. The vehicle will "wander" into another lane unless you constantly correct the steering. The steering feels very disconnected. Dealer says that this is just the way the steering works.
