gas tank tray rotten gas tank tray rotten

Was under the back end of the vehicle to remove the trailer hitch and noticed some rust in the gas tank tray. At first I thought it was a bush tray to prevent damage to the gas tank but after some research it turns out to be critical. It holds the gas tank in! Before I found that out I removed some crumbled rust and cut back to good metal. Internet searched showed up photos of Cherokees giving birth to the gas tank. Why this is not a safety recall is absolutely ridiculous.

A definite issue since you can buy a replacement tray on line although it is a discontinued part from Jeep. I have nursed the vehicle since I found out the issue and have kept the tank no more than half full. Driving the right hand lanes close to the breakdown lane and very nervous when people tailgate, which is almost impossible no a days.

Service to replace the tray is now booked. Hopefully there are no more surprises.

Another $1000 expense for a vehicle that might only be worth $5000 on a good day.
