This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Jeep dealer.
What started out as a popping and clicking sound in the rear end is now a roaring sound when driving down the road. I know that the pinion and gears are destroyed, presumably from the wheel bearings going out. This rear end was only in the Jeep for 2 years.... I am guessing they know that it is problematic. It's nearly impossible to find a salvaged rear end and fixing it with new parts costs nearly more than the worth of the vehicle.

just another thing gone wrong with this jeep. 75,000 miles and rear end goes out. This 2005 jeep is the worst vehicle i have ever owned. My wife and i both like jeeps, but it will be hard to own another one.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi/ limited. I bought this vehicle used with 100,000. 8 months later the rear differential decided to leak and also both axle end seals. The vehicle is not abused or neglected. Called around for quotes and $1500 was the low end to have rebuilt. Places where even charging upwards around $2100 for rebuild. A howling noise was also present when the leak began. I keep an eye on fluid level and topped off when need be and it still howled which means the pinion bearing was bad. Was not expecting this from a vehicle with not such high miles. I have so many other complaints to about his vehicle and have regretted buying it within the first month.
