Had truck for 800 miles since purchase used from the original owner. I am 6'5" tall. Was driving on the freeway when the ignition key (1.5" from my knee) accidentally turned the truck off due to contact with my knee. Under different circumstances, loss of power steering, most braking, and possibly airbags could be very dangerous. Hours later I read a story in the mountain news newspaper about a driver leaving the highway due to this same Jeep problem. That accident was two weeks ago and the vehicle and trailer overturned on hwy 18. I mentioned this issue to a friend who had the identical 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and he said the knee/key issues happened to him "several times" before he sold it. He is 6'6" tall. Secondly, all four interior door handles are falling apart and failing due to brittle plastic. They break with no notice and would prevent emergency egress from the vehicle. While it would be possible to roll the window down and open the door from the outside, with the ignition accidentally shut off that would be a problem. This is an essentially universal problem with this door handle design.

While slowing to make a turn in a left turn lane, right knee contacted the ignition key causing the engine to shut down. I was already braking, so came to stop, without incident, and restarted the engine. Chrysler sent us a notification of recall several months ago and indicated that they would notify us when parts were available to fix the problem. A subsequent notification suggested positioning the seat such that it would keep the knee from contacting the key. This is an absurd suggestion by Chrysler. If I do what their suggestion says, I must drive with my arms almost fully extended, which then means that the driver is not optimally positioned for the air bag protection. I think that the us dept of transportation needs to call Chrysler out on this and get the problem resolved before some unintended consequences occur as a result of their temp fix solution.

This is in regards to Chrysler's recall of ignition switches - P41. A notice that a safety recall was in effect was announced early summer of 2014 and since then Chrysler keeps saying the part is unavailable. It's well over six months since the recall was announced. I have called Chrysler 3 times and they cannot provide an answer to when the part will be available. My Jeep continues to have ignition switch problems, while I drive two small children on a daily basis. It is unacceptable that Chrysler knows about the dangerous switch problem and yet has done nothing to timely remedy the situation and make the part available to affected consumers. It is irresponsible that the government doesn't do more to pressure and fine Chrysler for the lack of urgency being placed on this recall.
