Engine dies suddenly while driving.

My 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee (5.8L) has a persistent problem where the engine will shut off unexpectedly. Problem has been ongoing for 9 mounts, and 3 different dealers have been unable to determine the cause of the problem. Problem occurs in all driving conditions, and is not repeatable. Sometimes engine shuts off very briefly (~.25 second) and picks up with just a 'hiccough' in normal operation, sometimes engine shuts off for > 2 seconds, and I need to shift to neutral, and re-engage the key to start the engine. The problem occurs at random times (on cruise control on straight, flat highway at 65 mph, idling at stop light, accelerating into traffic, slowing for exit ramp). Sometimes I will drive for hundreds of miles without an occurrence, sometimes the engine cuts out 5 times in a 5 mile drive. Problem is not repeatable, and not predictable.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5.7L hemi 4X4. Experiencing loud engine noise when first started. Most noticeable when engine is cold. More pronounced on colder days than warmer days. Appears to eventually subside after engine reached maximum operating temperature. Noise is not engine piston slap, does nopt increase when engine revolutions are increased, rather, it appears to subside, indicating valve train noise due to hydraulic lifter not fully pumping up, resulting in valve train chatter reminiscent of mechanical lifters needing adjustment, due to cold oil (higher viscosity) or low oil pump pressure. Changing to manufacturer recommended mobile1 seems to increase noise.

Since turning 38,000 miles my Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 limited has begun to stall with regularity. The vehicle also shifts very hard while at highway speeds. The vehicle has stalled while standing at a stop, traveling on secondary roads, and highway speeds. The dealer has changed some sensors etc without any success. Even work done at an independent garage has failed to solve anything. This vehicle has become an absolute death trap. I depend on this vehicle for work and to Transport my 1 year old. When the vehicle stalls no lights indicate an issue and no codes are stored. The dealer has sent me packing numerous times. They always say to come back when a light comes on. I've tried to explain that the next time may be the last time. A search online showed that my situation is far from the only one. I've had numerous Jeep over the year and never had this problem. Something has got to be resolved. Not only am I and my family in danger, but anyone near me while I'm on the road. Who would expect the car in front of them on the highway traveling at 65 mph to just stop. Please NHTSA step up and flex some muscle.

It would not roll down. TL contact owns a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 30 mph on normal road conditions, the engine unexpectedly stalled. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle restarted after the first attempt. The gear shifter was placed into drive and the accelerator pedal was depressed, but there was no response. The contact made several attempts before the vehicle was able to be driven again. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but they were unable to duplicate the failure. In addition, the gear shifter was stuck in park and would not shift into reverse. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on a separate occasion for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 2,355. Updated 3/3/09 the consumer had difficulty getting the vehicle thevehicle out of gear. The left front window did not functin properly. Updated 03/04/09.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel 4X4. Power loss, hesitation, mostly happens at low speeds and gets progressively worse. The vehicle idles fine, then when you step on the accelerator to move out into traffic it sputters and doesn't proceed as expected. Very serious safety issue especially since the computer sees no codes so the dealer doesn't know where to start looking. It doesn't do it all the time and it's impossible to determine when it will do it.
