I'm just shocked that the vehicle gave no warning. We were traveling on I-95 returning home from very serious surgery so it was VERY inconvenient. We found a used engine with less than 50,000 miles which we purchased for under $2000 and our mechanic did the swap. After a thorough check of the failed engine, he told us that in all his years as a mechanic, he had never encountered a failure where this many things had gone wrong.
Apparently the water pump had failed (there was no warning of any kind) which in turn caused the engine to seize. The starter also failed and the timing module failed. One would think that in a vehicle as expensive as a Jeep Cherokee the manufacturer would have installed a 'fail safe' system to 1) set off an alarm when the engine begins to overheat and 2) kill the ignition when the engine temperature approaches a level which could cause serious damage. Had I not known an honest competent mechanic, I could easily see the repair cost approaching $10,000.
