headrest detached while driving headrest detached while driving headrest detached while driving headrest detached while driving headrest detached while driving

My driver's-side headrest/"airbag" deployed without a collision. I was wiping down my seat after I got it dirty and when I wiped over the headrest it "popped" against my hand. I heard a tinkling noise of something bouncing around inside my vehicle. After further inspection there were plastic clips that hold the headrest together and the plastic clips broke, causing the spring-loaded headrest to deploy. I was incredibly lucky that this happened while I was parked in my driveway because I did some research and other people have had this happen and have had it happen while they were driving! There is not currently a recall on the headrests so there is no guarantee that this won't happen again if i spend the $600+ to get a new headrest installed.

THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN PROBLEM AND JEEP SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL. ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT IS PART OF THE VEHICLE'S SAFETY SYSTEMS, AND IT'S DANGEROUS TO HAVE THE THING DEPLOY WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING BECAUSE THE PLASTIC HOUSING INSIDE ISN'T ENGINEERED WELL ENOUGH TO STAND UP TO THE INTERNAL TENSION OVER TIME, AND THE PLASTIC CLIPS HOLDING THE THING TOGETHER JUST BREAK!

NOW, I HAVE TO PAY $800 OR MORE TO GET THIS DEFECTIVE PART REPLACED...PROBABLY JUST TO HAVE THE ONE ON THE OTHER SEAT DO THE SAME THING! THIS IS CRAP, AND JEEP SHOULD STAND UP AND TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THIS OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT!

headrest detached while driving headrest detached while driving headrest detached while driving

On 3/31/2016, I was driving on the highway when my head was expectantly punched from the back and thrown forward. I initially thought I was hit by another car from behind, no one was behind me. I pulled off the highway and discover my headrest had separated from the back by over 3 inches. I attempted to push and pull it back into place with no success.

I took it to the dealership where I was asked if the vehicle had been in a front or rear end accident - I am the only owner and it has not. The dealership attempted to put it back into place with no success. I was told to call Jeep (800-992-1997). After the dealerships attempt to fix it, the headrest now rattles while driving. Jeep stated this is the first complaint they have received of a headrest deployment while driving. They explained headrest is set to deploy in a front or rear end accident to avoid whiplash. They offered to partially cover the cost but offered no specific amount.

I explained it is a safety issue, it feels like a ticking time bomb behind my head and I wanted it replaced. I was told they would get back to me. Additionally I am unable to remove the headrest so I have had to raise the headrest as high as possible but still 'hunch' over while driving. As of 4/29/16 Jeep has failed to follow up. They have failed to return phone calls for the past two weeks and my headrest has not been replaced. I am interested to know if anyone else has a similar issue and who I should contact (outside of Jeep) to report my concern. Thank you
