This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Jeep dealer.
When cold and shifting between 2nd and third the transmission would delay and then finally, after going to 4,000 rpm's, would shift to third but when it did it would do it with a lurch. They replaced this part and 5 days later the new replaced part failed and they replaced it again. Will add another complaint for it.

while making right hand turns from a raised driveway or parking lot, onto a roadway, it loses power for about 3 seconds. had jeep in several times. finally they replaced (or at least said they did) the valve body (at bottom of transmission). they state they also performed an update to the transmission control module.
whats interesting is that the loss of power didn't occur for the next 2-3 weeks but eventually came back. it made me wonder whether they even REPLACED the valve body or just did some band aid repair to it. whatever they did, worked for 2 weeks. I told them that I had researched the issue a little bit and read up on another BODY or VALVE item. they told me that would have been an item on the upper end of the transmission. I don't recall the name for that item however. they told me they were not going to guess on a repair item and needed the engine light or warning light to lead them in the right direction. they then admitted the GUESSED on the valve body repair.
I'm at a loss cause they refuse to do any other repairs. if it wasn't under warranty, I'm sure they would do the guessing and repairs at my cost. I know there is a problem and I believe they know it. it likely needs a new transmission. does anyone have an answer as to what the problem is??

They put in 2 valve bodies and it's worse. Should of stayed with Ford.

car shifts poorly in the lower gears. Backing out of driveway is the worst. When shifting from reverse to drive it searches and then either lunges or stumbles. Driven hard it is better but driving at normal speeds the transmission seeks and hunts for what to do.

Transmission is lurching, delaying shifting and jumping movements. This happens when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gears. I took it into the dealer and they test drove it and told me ITS NORMAL and the transmission has to adjust to the way I drive. Really Dissapointing

Just after 5 days when I purchased the car and the mileage was (400 KM) I started noticing a clicking sound and a light vibration type thing in the gear handle. When pressing the button on the top of the gear handle and a hit hard sound from under gearbox when when shifting into D - N - R.
I went to the Dealer the technician there checked the vehicle and said it's normal, but for me it is not. The gear shifting should be smooth without any noise or movement.
It needs to be fixed, this sound is irritating me.
Thank You for Understanding

Bought brand new 7/31/14 one of the first 15's on the road. 3k in miles and it starts jerking gears to gear. They do some software updates and it goes away...for about 5 days. Didnt have time to take back right away so a couple thousand miles more and back to get checked again. Same thing. Software and away we go. And guess what. Still busted. So when i have time and they can look at it again.... back in.
9k miles. New transmission. And away we go. But wait for it.... couple thousand miles on new trans....it comes back. 2-3 shift over revs slams into 3. 4-5 shift same deal. And on occasion 6-7. And i noticed a bit of lag now on down shift sitting in 4th or 3rd and then almost like a manual car can engine break with down shifts it starts acting that way. So back in again. Guess what... software update again. That's 5 times total. And as soon as I pull out and around the corner it happens again. So back to the dealer again.
They are calling Chrysler to see if there is a "fix" other than a 2nd new 3rd overall transmission. Pretty sure we just did that and its still busted. Time for a refund or a brand new one. This has been a year and almost a half of a pain in my a** and now its winter and I'm in a crappy rental w front wheel drive. Chrysler better get this fixed. Oh and it was a friends and family vehicle that went through a second round of sanity checks before it left the factory. Well done Chrysler. Well done.

Poor shifting in lower gears, feels like it's trying to find the slot.

Transmission is delaying shifting and jumping movements. This happens until the car warms up and also when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gears. I took it into the dealer and they updated the TCM and I still have the same problem. They told me the transmission has to adjust to the way I drive. 3,000 miles later ....going back to the dealership.
Update from Jan 3, 2016: The PCM was updated.on 12-28-2015..... was told that this should fix the problem ..... still having the same issue when it's cold ..... will give it another 2,000 miles to adjust to my driving......
Update from Oct 2, 2016: Well... at 15K miles .....no change.... disappointing to say the least.....

Just another disgruntled Jeep owner, being told by the dealership that Chrysler engineers are saying that my Jeep's data comes back as normal, despite erratic shifting, jerking, and lunging. The transmission slips from 2nd-3rd gear and shifts hard when cold (Trans temp below 110). It also intermittently lunges/bumps forward when coming to a stop. That's the dangerous thing. We've brought it in 4 times this year for the same problem, which goes unresolved even after being flashed/relearned. Going to pursue lemon law. BS that Chrysler won't admit this is a problem.
After doing some research, I believe this problem lies within Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram's electronic control systems. This transmission is in many makes and models of vehicles, but trans complaints are heavily reported by CDJR owners. The powertrain control modules must be proprietart. Just take a few minutes and look up different makes and model complaints here on carcomplaints.com and you'll see what I mean.

...And if that wasn't bad enough, apparently the 9 speed trans found in the Cherokee, Ram Promaster, Renegade, and more models is even worse:

Car is only 3 months old from the dealership. It has been back to have the auto transmission to be looked at. When driving in slow speed, traffic less than 15kph - I've noticed the auto, jolts when changing up from 1 to 2. It also jolts from 3 to 2.
When selecting reverse or park I also get a jolt and loud thud/clunk from the auto trans.
Has been to dealership, they performed a flash but no effect.

Started searching Internet for info and found this web site. I am now hesitant to drive this vehicle far. I have noticed that on deceleration down shifting has become "hard" as in skipping gears. Also, more often now upon acceleration being hesitant then all of a sudden the vehicle accelerates very fast. Mostly noticed driving in town/heavy traffic conditions. Now with these listed warnings I am certain I have the "known" transmission problem. Going to dealer tomorrow!
Update from Aug 18, 2016: MIL ended up being for an evac leak related to the fuel tank. Took three different visits and several replaced sections of tubing/hoses and a sensor before a successful fix. For the hard shifting, they flashed (reprogrammed) the transmission control. Have not had any issues since then. I sympathize with those that have had issues with the shifter. However, with new technology there is a learning curve. I have had two instances where I thought I had placed the transmission in park. Both times it was in reverse, just where both indicators said it was. Luckily I wasn't in such a hurry and was still seated. So far I've never had any incorrect indications. Running up on 31,000 miles and the vehicle is doing fine. Probably just jinxed myself as we are about to depart on a 5K road trip. You'll definitely hear from me if I encounter any issues. Safe driving to all!!

Purchased a new 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7L Hemi V-8. The transmission is terrible. It is so rough and jerky with its shifting. I only test drove it a couple times and for very short distances, so maybe I would have noticed if I took it home before I bought it. The transmission on it is very rough and it has trouble picking the right gears. Under most driving conditions, the transmission will upshift too soon or too late resulting in a strong jerk motion or a major hesitation and vibrating throughout the dashboard if it is in too high of gear when the current speed is too low. There is a major delay in the shifting also resulting in other jerking or abrupt whiplash type moments when driving in stop and go conditions. When coming to a stop, it always downshifts really hard and it is so unpleasant to drive.
I really regret my purchase. It is so bad that I am already considering trading it in even though I know I will lose a lot of $.

While driving at around 50 miles per hour, the transmission shifted to 7th gear as I was braking, due to cars coming to a stop and would not downshift. Then the check engine light came on. This occurred shortly after driven less than 1 mile.
I was able to pull over with out getting killed (for lack of power due to low speed) and stuck in 7th gear. I shut off the vehicle and restarted and I was able to shift it again. I took it to the dealer and they Re-flashed the transmission which they told me was the latest and greatest revision.
This should have been done prior to them selling the vehicle to me but, it worked for two weeks and happened again. NEW TRANSMISSION NEEDED!! LESS THAN 8K on vehicle. DO NOT BUY CHRYSLER!
Update from Apr 3, 2015: Replaced tranny 10 days after this post
Update from May 30, 2015: took back to the dealer after they replaced my transmission with 8K on the odometer. The NEW transmission is starting to act exactly like the old one. When in for replacement they did something in serpentine area. Making noise now was not before tranny replacement. Dealer told me it was the air compressor. Replaced that noise still remains. Had a alignment done; wheel was straight before the alignment, came back off 3-5 degrees to the left. That was acceptable to the tech who took it to prove I was telling the truth. Manager sent me an email and told me that it would be best for both parties to part ways cause I expect too much from them!! I called corporate, they told me that the dealer does not wishto service my JGC that I purchased there cause i don't get along with their staff!!! I am going Lemon law in Massachusetts. Kimmel and Sullivan. Wish me luck. Somerset, Ma jeep sucks

Brand New Jeep GC Overland, few glitches, good quality overall
- Dilraj S., Watchung, NJ, US
Transmission up-shifts abruptly in stop and go driving up to 15mph during 1-2 upshift. Transmission upshifts too late / held too long. Transmission downshifts too early at times.
There is a Transmission Shift Enhancement TSB issued by Chrysler to flash the software and improve performance. Otherwise, transmission shifts are very good.

The Valve Body was replaced on 8/5/16 and failed again on 8/17/16. Only 300+/- miles after replacing it the first time. This is the complaint log for the second time.
