My key will not turn in the ignition of the 2003 Jeep Liberty. The steering column was not locked and I tried for about 20 minutes to jiggle/turn the wheel, jiggle the automatic transmission shifter, etc. The key was inserted fully because electrical came on to alert me that the key was in the ignition (when I opened the driver door the warning beeps came on to signify key still in ignition). The ignition simply would not turn. I had to have my car towed to a mechanic and have since learned from online research that this is a very common problem with Jeep Liberty's and many Chrysler products. The solutions seem to be patchwork workarounds that people have come up with independent of Chrysler's help.

The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that when attempting to start the vehicle, the ignition would seize and the steering wheel could not be turned. Also, when driving approximately 5 -25 mph, there was an abnormal clicking heard from the steering column. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised the contact that the ignition needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred approximately four months later. The vehicle was repaired a second time but the repairs were made by the contact. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000. The VIN was unavailable.

My fan blower just works on high. My engine light always on. Rusting back doors. I have been waiting for recalls. I love my Jeep!!!! but Jeep needs to fix multiple problems. It sucks that failed components does not let you list specific parts.

Power windows failing to stay up due to faulty regulators: Two years ago the rear left window of my 2003 Liberty fell into the door casing. When using the atomatic buttons, the window would not go up and the window motor would simply attempt to raise the window with no success. Upon taking it to the Jeep dealer, they stated the window regulator neeeded to be replaced. After paying $227.94, my window was fixed and back to normal. Surprisingly, a few months later, the right window fell while driving on the highway (this is a major safety issue). Back to the same dealership we went, for a second and unnecessary diagnostic (the maintence man said this was a problem he had frequently seen) to determine the regulator was broken. I paid to have the second window fixed and continued to drive my car. This week, the left rear window fell again while driving down the street in my neighborhood (20 mph). I contacted Jeep headquarters directly after researching online (inculding the NHTSA website) that this is clearly not an isolated incident and they have neglected to address the saftey issue with their automobile owners. They are requesting that I take my Jeep back in for another diagnostic, and to confirm there has been no "neglect" of maintenance on my part. My Jeep has just over 65,000 miles ' it is in perfect condition with the exception of faulty windows. Upon inspection of the dealer this week, Jeep says they will determine the next step depending on the results. This issue is dangerous for multiple reasons - children riding in the car, the frightening noise made from the dropping window, lack of security when parking the car/at a stop, weather (rain, hail, snow, etc.), drivers startled by the drop and attempting to assess the situation while driving, etc. According to Jeep headquarters via phone, they dishonestly claim to be unaware of the situation.

The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the speedometer failed intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who performed a diagnostic that located the failure at the speedometer sensors. The local mechanic replaced three sensors and the speedometer worked for one year before failing again. The contact was concerned because he was unable to determine at what speed he was traveling. The dealer was contacted and they advised that the failure would need to be diagnosed to determine how to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was not available and the current mileage was 79,554.

Headlights go out and hear clicking noise. This is a dangerous flaw. This is intermittent and the dealer can not seem to find the problem. In doing research there is a large history of this exact problem on the Jeep from years 2002-2004. The lights finally came on but on a dark curvey hill with cliffs could have caused a injury or fatal crash.

While driving my 2003 Jeep Liberty sport, I heard a loud and distracting thud, only to discover that the back window on the drivers side had fallen into the door. The door also became jammed and I was unable to open it from either the inside or outside of the vehicle. This happened to the other back widow just 9 months prior to this incident. At that time I took my vehicle to an auto repair shop, and paid to have it fixed.I have read several complaints about this happening in the Jeep Liberty. The issue is a cheap, plastic part used in the window regulator. This is a design flaw, and Chrysler will only replace this part with another cheap plastic part, rather than using a sturdier metal part. This is an expense issue as well as a safety issue. The noise the window makes when it falls is very distracting. All the doors and windows should be functioning properly in case of emergencies, and the driver should be able to control the windows, in order to avoid dangerous debris flying into the car, not to mention having some control over outside elements. (weather) Chrysler really should do a recall, and stop charging Jeep owners to fix what is their fault in the first place-it is a design flaw in the Jeep Liberty. Many reports from Jeep owners mention this happening to the same window, or multiple windows over and over. There ought to be a class action lawsuit against Chrysler.

After buying the car as Jeep Liberty renegade 2003 used at about 40,000 miles. The second time I drove the car on the interstate the car started stalling and running very rough. I limped in for about 15 miles to the repair shop and problem was diagnosed as a faulty crank sensor. That was replaced and car ran fine for 4 years. Now with 66000 miles the car stall while driving at low speed. Restarted and took car in and problem was diagnosed as a faulty crank sensor again, but part had to be ordered and car was running fine. So I decided to drive car while waiting for the part and next day the car would not start. When tow truck arrived car stated fine but had car towed to repair shop. The sensor was replaced but the shop still was having periodic stalling problem. It was finally diagnosed as a faulty cam shaft sensor which was replaced and now the car is running fine. Looks like Jeep has a problem with the sensors in the Jeep renegade model.

While driving headlights turn on & off intermittently without any action from the driver. This is a dangerous situation when it happens, frequency varies from daily to once a week. Another (related?) action started happening at the same time, also intermittent engine will shut off while driving. Engine will usually restart but not idle without holding the gas pedal down. After turning off and waiting a short time the engine will start and idle fine for a matter of minutes or days.

Our vehicle began stalling out while driving on a main road. We pulled over and the vehicle would not start. When attempting to start it again white smoke began coming out. I called a tow truck to get us home. It was sitting in the main road and I had my children with me. The malfunction indicator light came on. The car started up again. We took it to autozone and the crank sensor showed up. I bought a crank sensor and took it to fuccillos in adams NY. They replaced it and said that the crank sensor was seized into the engine. When it was done I picked it up but the same issues began. They did a diagnostic which showed another faulty crank sensor, a cam sensor and there was gas in our oil. Then I was told 3 ignition coils were melted. Then I was told another coil was bad. Chrysler said that when there is an issue with your crank or cam that the coils will remain hot even when the car is off. Looking on line, many people have the same issues-some have the same issues over and over again. I called to ask if there was a recall but was told not of yet.

On several occasions my car has stalled. Prior to it stalling it would have power surges, backfire, the RPM needle would go crazy, and then just shut off loosing all power to brakes and steering. Stalling would occur mostly at lower rates of speeds (under 50mph). It wouldn't turnover immediately. I would have to wait 20 to 25 seconds each time and then it would start, almost as if the system resets itself. It's pretty scary when you have to young children and your on a freeway and your car all of a sudden stalls. The second problem I'm having is a very loud noise coming from the rear end. I pointed my side mirror down towards my backtire. I watched as the rearend made a load cluncking noise and it was as if the back tire was being pushed outwards. The third problem is my passenger side rear window just dropped into the door. The motor still works I can hear it. And last but no least my left turn signal blinks extremely fast and then sometimes it doesn't. my car is currently at the Jeep dealership. I think it's kind of funny that the guy wants to charge me $200 to investigate the problems I'm having to find out what it is. Thanks to everyone's complaints I can call him and tell him the problems, as if he didn't already know. Goodluck to everyone.

Transmission hesitates / lurches randomly. Car stalls out, increasingly frequently despite repairs. When engine cuts out, lose all power steering brakes etc - so far only at low speeds but progressively worse - seems very similar to Jeep commander recall at higher speeds. RPM needle goes wild after engine cuts out. Can restart and limp a few miles, then need tow - 2X towed in 1 week, 3X towed in 2 months, and 4 trips to shop without results. Car currently stuck upstate NY where I was trying to vacation -and Chrysler/Jeep not so cooperative. There's plenty evidence of stalling problems on internet for 4-5 years - see edmunds. Theories: Deceleration / rpms below 1000 make engine cut out. Solenoid is pulling battery amps =12 and causing havoc in ignition system, short-circuiting sensors. Thermal computer module damage. Computer scans for diagnostic codes definitely not reliable. By relying only on computer module for diagnosis, dealers are only making the problem worse because they are sending cars back out without fixing root problem, causing more damage. I had wheel sensor found corroded 6/3, crank sensor fail 8/6 and cam sensor failed 8/10. Sensors don't fail sequentially nor so fast. Something is causing sensors to fail. And while sensors not working they are causing damage of their own...computer, ignition coils (all 6 needed repair in 1 case where burned out). Who knows if the spark plugs, fuel pumps, injection cleans, and throttle body cleans work or not. (some say TB cleanout is important if stalls are at lower speeds - less air inflow). Battery seemed to have issues too soon - may be related. One case where harness wiring rubbed against rear something causing probs. My speedometer broke after 1 sensor repair. Separately (unless water and corrosion are the real culprits) brakes and rotors wearing out - replaced 2X in 40K miles. Not right. Some blog on that, too.

I have an '03 Jeep Liberty and 2 years after we bought it, we started having trouble with the ignition cylinder. It started to freeze up and would not turn some times, until it got to the place it would not turn at all. So we took it to dade Jeep Chrysler in South miami, fl..and so they replace the ignition cylinder and tunblers [supposedly]. and that was in '05 and here we are in '08, and we're having the same identical problem again. And their telling me I have to buy another ignition. The Jeep is just 5yrs. Old. I can remember when something like that would last the life of the vehicle.

My wife was driving her 2003 Jeep Liberty in traffic approaching a stop light. She bumped into the car in front of her traveling at about 10 mph. It was such a minor bump that the air bags did not deploy. The vehicle burst into flames from the engine compartment she barely had enough time to escape. The car is a total loss and the car is completely burnt out inside.

I have a Jeep Liberty limited 2003 leased on October 2002. Ive had to bring the vehicle in for service seven times for the same problem and the dealer has not repaired it. The problem is that while driving at speeds anywhere from 30 - 65 and while trying to accelerate from a complete stop the vehicle will start to buck and hesitate, the speedometer will swing back and forth and the vehicle suddenly loses speed and then regains it. I've almost been hit by another vehicle on the palisades parkway on three separate occasions. The failure started on April 28,2004 at 32,000 miles it now has 34,600 miles and it has reoccurred after all seven times of going in for repair of same condition after the dealership at central ave Chrysler Jeep in yonkers, claims to have repaired it. The dealership will not honor the warranty by properly repairing or replacing vehicle.
