The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that moments after exiting the freeway, the front end of the vehicle began to shake and vibrate. While driving approximately 5 MPH, there was an abnormal banging sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that suddenly the wheels would not turn, and the vehicle became undrivable. The vehicle was towed to the residence and later examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the driver's side ball joint arm had fractured. The independent mechanic replaced the driver's side ball joint assembly and the lower control arm, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 189,000.

The dealer was notified of the issue and the contact was informed that there was no recall associated with the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. As a result, the control arm fell and cut into the wheel rim, which made it impossible for the other wheels to turn or move. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The manufacturer advised that the vehicle be taken to a local dealer. The dealer stated that the failure was crash related and not a recall issue. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they informed him that the lower ball joint broke due to excessive corrosion. There was a recall under the NHTSA campaign id number 03V460000 ( suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). The technician advised that the VIN was excluded from the recall and the owner would be responsible for the repair expense. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 92,000. The VIN was unavailable.

The contact towed the vehicle to a local mechanic and they discovered that the front lower ball joint was broken. The mechanic notice a recall for the suspension;front;control arm but the vehicle VIN number was not included in the recall. The contact stated if the vehicle was traveling at a higher speed the vehicle would have caused a crash. The contact feels the manufacturer should be responsible for the repairs. The failure mileage was 95,000.

2003 Jeep Liberty limited. Due for inspection may of 2009. Failed to pass inspection due to front lower ball joints. Next day, received notice in the mail regarding recall of front lower ball joints (the recall was issued in 2006, I found out later, but this was the first I was notified). Called dealership (don white's of timonium) regarding recall, was told it would take a few days to receive parts, but still within the month of may, told that they would call in a few days with more exact dates. Canceled appointment that I had previously made to have ball joints replaced, since recall would repair the parts free of charge. Never received phone call, so placed call myself to dealership, told it would be several weeks to receive parts as they were on back-order. I then placed call to Chrysler to investigate huge delay on recall parts (May 26th). I was told that they were on back-order, but Chrysler would arrange for a rental (free of charge) while I waited for the parts to arrive. I was told they would call me in 3 to 4 days with the car rental information. Never received phone call. Called Chrysler again on June 1st, was told to wait another day. Called back the next day (today) and was informed that the dealership never ordered the parts and that Chrysler needed to "investigate" further before I could be issued a rental, if I would get one at all. Now the inspection has expired on the Jeep and I am left with an unsafe vehicle. I still have to work and cannot afford a rental for what could amount to a month or more.

The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. A couple of weeks after purchasing the vehicle, the contact heard a screeching noise coming from the front passenger side tire. The dealer stated that there were other matters that needed to be taken care of first. On April 18, 2008, while making a left turn at 5 mph, the contact heard a loud screeching noise. The front driver side of the undercarriage fell to the ground. The front driver side tire detached and was resting beside the vehicle, hanging on by a thread. The front fender, bumper, and wheel covering all detached from the vehicle and were damaged. The vehicle is currently with a mechanic. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number 03V460000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint); however, she never received a safety recall notice. The dealer stated that the front ball joints failed and needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 78,000. Updated 05/19/08. Updated 05/19/08.

While driving slowly out of my driveway, my upper ball joint disconnected causing the passenger side front tire to fall off. I did have my children with me however no one was injured. The apparent recall in 06 of the lower ball joints was unknown to me at the time. Chrysler did replace the upper and lower ball joints. I was charged a $150. Deductible which I feel is very unfair considering the investigation revolving around the upper ball joints and obvious concerns about the lower ball joints. My concern now is when will it happen again, it only had 50,000 miles at the time and can I assume it's safe to drive another 50,000. It's not worth putting my kids in danger. How can Chrysler assure me that it is fixed!

While driving approximately 55 mph, the contacts grandson heard a loud breaking noise and the steering immediately locked, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The rear passenger side tire detached from the vehicle; however, he was able to avoid a crash and successfully stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a local garage. A police report was filed. A professional technician inspected the vehicle and noticed that the front and rear axles were corroded for a very long time, which caused them to fail. The insurance company stated that the vehicle was completely destroyed. The dealer did not provide any assistance. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was included in NHTSA campaign id number 06V288000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint), but the contact never received a recall notice. The manufacturer sent an investigator to inspect the vehicle and it was discovered that there was no correlation between the failure and the recall. The manufacturer is refusing to assume any liability for any of the damaged components caused by the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired and the contact has pictures of the failed component. The failure and current mileages were 61,000. Updated 05/06/08 the consumer had brusing on his shoulder. Updated 04/01/11

I received a recall notice in January about the lower ball joints on Jeep Liberty's. I called my dealer in order to have the defect corrected and was told that I was "put on the list." It is now August and I still haven't received a call back to get the defect corrected. I called to ask the dealership if they could give me a time frame on how long it would be before I got my Jeep fixed and they said "it is a long list, you will be called. Chrysler only sends us two replacement parts a week."
