About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
We purchased a 2004 Jeep Liberty equiped with Goodyear Wrangler St tires two weeks ago. With less than 250 miles on the car/tires, our daughter was driving home from university at approx 60mph (temp about 85 degrees, clear & dry) when the sidewall on the right front tire split (completely) around the entire circumference of the tire. She was able to bring the car to a stop without an accident. About 3" of the outside side wall is completely severed from the rest of the tire. There is no evidence of road damage to the tread or sidewall, except for the scuff marks left from the incident. The car was new so we had not checked the tire pressure, although they did not appear to be underinflated and the car was not overloaded. There were no passengers. The failed tire was a Goodyear Wrangler St, P215/75R16, serial no. T307589 grf 95M3ms. The dealer has offered to replace the tire but we are concerned about the reliability of the remaining tires, which were manufactured at the same time based on the serial numbers. This was essentially a brand new tire on a brand new car and it suffered a catestrophic failure under normal load and driving conditions. We are very concerned about this.
