Our 2008 Jeep Liberty was parked in the driveway. All of the sudden the horn began honking on it's own, the vehicle started, the alternator made the belt burn, and the windshield wipers would not shut off. All of this was happening with no key in the ignition and the vehicle was locked. When we tried to put the key in the ignition, the vehicle would not stop making the noises or shut off.

When starting vehicle it will not turn over. It continues to crank until ignition is switched off. This problem does not happen all the time and is very unpredictable. Typically after several attempts the vehicle will start up correctly. The vehicle has done this in the cold and in the heat, after running fine all day or sitting turned off over night.

Front windshield wipers automatically comes on once car starts. Wiper switch is in the off position. Turning signals has ceased. The totally integrated power module (tipm) is what defective, which causes a safety issue. Several Jeep have this problem & the manufacturer needs to fix it; it's a defect.

The skyslider roof on my 2008 Jeep Liberty is broken and has been for years. I had it fixed while under warranty, but it broke several months later after my warranty expired. Now I have been quoted $4000 to repair it again. It came off the tracks while driving and started flapping in the air. Water leaks in the car even when the roof worked. The roof comes off the tracks and then breaks the cable that runs it. You can be stationary or moving. The second issue is the wheel speed sensors go out frequently, and disables your 4 wheel drive. So, if a sensor goes out while you are off roading, you are stuck..... thats really not cool if you are in a secluded place with no one around to help and zero cell service. Just some really dumb engineering, and totally unsafe.

Driving on the highway my sky slider folded back off the track making a horrific sound. The power button used to open and close the sky slider does not work. It just makes a grinding noise. We had to manually push the sky slider down. There is also a leaking issue when there is rain. Water pours into the vehicle from around the front interior lights on the roof between the driver and passenger seat. There is also water marks from the sky slider leaking. I also have a sensor that stays on constantly. The sensor is for low tire pressure.

Various electrical systems would spontaneously turn on while driving or parked. My wipers (front and back) would turn on full speed, my horn would blast, lights would dim. Even when I turn the car off, these systems stay on. When I open the drivers door, the wipers would occasionally move 1-2 inches.

Last February my Jeep started acting funny. The horn, wipers, fluid, raido, seat, and lights all went crazy while driving. Thinking that it was a battery or spark plug issue I replaced both. No luck. The next day I stated my car ABS the horn would not shut off. I disconnected the battery and had it towed for diagnosis. Tipm good I was told. 2 days later same thing. I brought my vehicle to another mechanic but this time asked to see the schematics. There is only one common component the tipm. No engine issues found, tipm tested for a week, no results. Got my car back and one week later recorded the car doing exactly what I had stated. This system only has 1 check with results either good or bad. I looked up recalls-none, called Jeep and complained about how dangerous this is. I'm not incredibly tall so for my seat to move itself backwards while driving was scarey! I ended up going to a Jeep dealership convinced this was the issue and had the box replaced and system reset. One yr later still no issues. I still have the videos as proof of this claim. Please realize all times this happened with the exception of the horn going off, battery disconnected, I was driving on the hwy going into street traffic. Only once was the weather incredibly bad; raining to the point of flooding. Because I live in upstate NY there was also snow and ice present. Due to my vehicle acting up, I chose not to take my niece's over the weekend as I typically did. Being responsible I couldn't let something happen with a then 4 year old in my car.

There has been an intermittent issue where the check engine light comes on followed by the traction control light (usually after making a left hand turn.) when this first started the vehicle was still under warranty, and went to Jeep. They had our Liberty for several days and swapped out the cam and crankshaft sensors to "fix" this problem. The car again was acting up within a month or so, and when we called the dealer back to bring it back in they advised us that the extended warranty that we paid a lot of money for was now expired. I took it to a local auto parts store to have the codes read. It was again code C121C, in conjunction with the codes relating to faulty cam and crankshaft sensors. Since the service department stated that they replaced the cam and crankshaft sensors. I replaced the needed parts and this lasted maybe 20 miles, prior to the lights coming back on. I attempted to replace them a second time thinking I may have gotten a defective part or two, but it wound up being the same end result; about 10-20 miles in the check engine light and traction control lights came on. This prevented the vehicle from shifting into over drive, it prevents the vehicle from accelerating at a normal speed, and above 50 mph the whole vehicle will wildly shutter when you let your foot off the gas. Jeep will not warranty the drive terrain even though the state the vehicle should have a 100K mile warranty on the drive terrain.

The contact owned a 2008 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, he attempted to brake while maneuvering the vehicle to avoid crashing into another vehicle which was stopped. The electronic stability control prevented the vehicle from successfully maneuvering. As a result, the vehicle was involved in a rollover crash. The contact sustained a broken wrist and was transported to the hospital via ambulance. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a towing yard. The approximate failure mileage was 23,000.
